Hockey Highlight of the month!

Greenfields 1sts   2 – 1   Galway 1sts

(Mary Healy X 2)

Once again, Greenfields proved to be the better side, in their clash against Galway HC at the weekend.  Having just last week knocked Galway 1sts out of the Connacht Senior Cup competition, the two rivals were pitched against each other again.  This time, it was for the quarter finals of the Irish Hockey Trophy competition.

Greenfields had a shaky start, making several errors, which resulted in Galway hitting the back-board after 10 minutes.  With five minutes to half-time in this fiercely competitive match, Galway were reduced to ten players, & it seemed like Greenfields might capitalise on this advantage, but with the score remaining one-nil at half-time, Greenfields badly needed to regroup.

After an inspirational half-time talk from Coaches Bryan Madden & Paul McGettigan, Greenfields came out very strong from the whistle.  Five minutes into the 2nd half, Mary Healy scored for Greenfields, putting them back in the game again.  The squad dug deep & piled on the pressure, which was rewarded with another goal by Mary Healy, five minutes from the end.

There were ecstatic scenes on the side-line when the full-time whistle blew – with Greenfields winning 2-1.  Manager Imelda Brennan praised the squad for turning their play around, giving them the victory.

Greenfields travel to the Model County next month, where they will meet Wexford HC in the semi-final on Saturday March 6th.  A supporters bus will be organised, so please come along & lend your voice!
