Hurlers score impressive victory

November 8, 2018

Edenderry hurlers recorded an impressive win over Tullamore in the league last Saturday on a scoreline of 2-20 to 4-07. After a tight opening quarter, Edenderry had the better of the remainder of the game, as they racked up a high points tally in glorious sunshine at Edenderry GAA grounds.

The two sides swapped points early on with Sean Og Farrell and Ger Hanlon putting The Reds ahead twice only for Tullamore to level each time. Then with a piece of good fortune Edenderry had their first goal on the board when Martin Keogh sent a dangerous ball into the Tullamore goalmouth. The 'keeper failed to deal with Keogh's delivery, as it slipped through his fingers into the net. The goal was soon followed by the score of the game, when Ger Hanlon flicked the ball behind him to the forward moving Eoghan Kelly who fired over the bar after a good run. Tullamore were soon on level terms when they scored a goal and a point. But Martin Keogh put Edenderry back in front with a good point, but the lead didn't last too long as Tullamore had the ball in the Edenderry net for a second time, to go in front by two points. Hard work from Edenderry then earned two frees which Ger Hanlon converted. Tullamore went in front again with a good point, before the Edenderry management introduced Bill Glennon for Liam Grennan at corner forward. Bill Glennon was only on the field a matter of moments when he sent over a great point to tie the scores. Edenderry then hit a purple patch, as they scored a further goal and four points without reply, the goal coming from Martin Keogh who had a tap in after great work Sean Og Farrell, and the points came from Paul Glennon, Sean Og Farrell and Ger Hanlon (two frees). Just before halftime Tullamore sent over a point from a free to reduce Edenderry's lead at the break to six points.

Halftime, Edenderry 2-11 Tullamore 2-05.

At the break John Paul Brennan was replaced at corner back by Colin McCormack. Soon after the resumption of the game Edenderry conceded a goal, as Brendan McCabe attempted to clear the ball, he was blocked and the ball fell straight into the back of the net. Moments later Tullamore nearly got in for another goal, but this time Brendan McCabe made a great save at the expense of a 65 metre free. Tullamore converted the resulting free to leave two points between the teams. The Edenderry management then introduced Mattie Moore at full forward in place of Thomas Fay. Eoghan Kelly then scored an excellent point as he powered forward from midfield to send the ball over the bar. Jason Carey then sent over two points, the first after a good hand pass from Ger Hanlon, and the second after Ger found Carey in space with a short free. Tullamore then hit the upright with a free, before Sean Og Farrell sent over a point for The Reds, after great work from Jason Carey. Moments later Carey was replaced by youngster Shane Steel. Tullamore then scored a point from a free, before Edenderry hit three points in a row from Ger Hanlon (2) and Sean Og Farrell. Tullamore got in for their fourth goal of the game, after Brendan McCabe made a fine save, but he was unfortunate to see the ball rebound kindly to a Tullamore forward who tapped the ball to the back of the net. Daryl Brereton came into the action at wing back for Paul Hanlon, before Edenderry finished the scoring with two fine points, one each from Martin Keogh and Ger Hanlon.

Best for Edenderry on the day were Stephen Murphy, Martin Keogh, Eoghan Kelly, Ger Hanlon, Sean Og Farrell and Jason Carey.
