Intermediate hurling championship

November 8, 2018

Cobh qualified for round 3 of the intermediate hurling championship with a 5 point win over Dublin Hill side Delaney’s. Taking the game to the opposition from the start Derek Barrett recovered a one point deficit with the first of 4 points. Goals followed from Alan Stack, probably players choice of man of the match and Peter Meaney to leave Cobh in command. The defence dealt well with the Delaney’s attack with a goal coming late in the first half to give some hope to the opposition. However, Brian Aherne and Stephen Kearney chipped in with a point each from play to leave the half time score at 2-7 to 1-7.

Indiscipline allowed Delaney’s to stay in touch however through frees and it looked like Cobh were in for a dogfight all the way to the end as Delaney’s brought Cobh’s lead back to 2 points in the second half.  A Peter Meaney point restored Cobh’s goal advantage and shortly after the ball again broke to Stack who shot low to the left corner of the net to give Cobh breathing space coming into the closing stages. Cobh were deserved victors and will build on this win with the return of players to the squad and look forward to the next challenge with relish. Scorers: A Stack (2-0), P Meaney (1-1), D Barrett (0-4 3 frees), J Meaney (0-2 2 frees), B Aherne (0-1), E Wilson (0-1), S Kearney (0-1).
