Intermediate Hurling Championship - Ballygarvan 2-15 Barryroe 3-12

November 8, 2018

Ballygarvan and Barryroe will have to battle it out again to win a place in the Intermediate Hurling County Final after a 2-15 to 3-12 draw this evening in Brinny. Barryroe got off to a flying start, leading by 1-6 to 0-2 with less than a quarter of an hour played. Ballygarvan kept battling away, with Mark Kennefick on free taking duties and Tadhg Quilligan getting the first score from play, in the 14th minute. Tadhg Quilligan was on the end of a Joe Spillane delivery again in the 24th minute, and raised the green flag, bringing Ballygarvan back 1-6 just a point behind Barryroe. Less than 2 minutes later, Joe Spillane again powered through from half forward line, showing his footballing skills, and kicked the ball into the net. Ballygarvan finished the half with another free from Mark Kennefick. With a two point lead at half time, after a very shaky start, things were looking up.

Gary White, who had been battling hard in midfield in the first half, started the second half in the same spirit, getting an excellent point from the centre field and a second only a bit closer in. A free from Barryroe, ending up in the back of the net, brought it back to a one point game and Tadhg Harrington who had been excellent thought out the game, brought it back to a draw at 2-10 a piece with just 10 minutes gone in the second half. The teams battled on, with Ballygarvan taking a 3 points with 20 minutes on the clock. Barryroe had introduced Gearóid Holland in their full forward line in the second half, and he was not found wanting when he got the ball, sticking into the back of the Ballygarvan net, bring the game back to a draw for a third time. Nerves were tested, battles were tough all over the field, and Barryroe again got another point. Injury time loomed, and it was looking like Ballygarvan’s championship was over. In injury time the ref blew again for another free, Mark Kennefick bravely came up to take it, after his last few efforts had gone narrowly wide, this time however, he was bang on target. The end result: 2-15 to 3-12. After the efforts from both teams, a draw was probably the fairest result.
