Intermediate team lose out to local rivals. Ballintubber B 0-14 Mayo Gaels 1-8

On a glorious day for football the ability to convert their chances ultimately proved the difference between the sides as Ballintubber B deservedly took local bragging rights in this division 1D league game. If the Gaels had taken their chances it could have been a different outcome.

Ballintubber got off to a great start and had the games first four points on the board inside the opening fifteen minutes through two frees and two from play. The Gaels responded with a Jonathan Griffin point from play when a goal was on before Ballintubber restored their four point lead with another point from play. The Gaels had the best spell of the game in the final twelve minutes of the half but failed to convert some guilt edged chances. Jonathan Griffin was fouled in the large square but failed to convert the resulting penalty. A good ball from Shane Vahey found Johnny Morrin who landed the Gaels second point from play. Morrin then screwed badly wide when through on goal. Danny Burke then narrowed the gap to the minimum with two frees. A great move saw a very cool finish to the net by the lively Jonathan Griffin who beautifully chipped the ball over the advancing keeper to leave the Gaels 0-5 to 1-4 clear at the break.

As in the first half Ballintubber started very brightly and wiped out the Gaels lead with three points from play. Only a fine save from young keeper PJ Larkin prevented a sure goal. The Gaels regained the lead with two points through a Paul Mannion point from play after being setup by the hardworking James Fallon. Fallon again setup Jonathan Griffin who was fouled and the resulting free was pointed by Danny Burke. In a ding dong game Ballintubber regained the lead with a free and point from play as the Gaels tactic of carrying the ball resulted in numerous costly turnovers of possession. A Danny Burke free levelled the sides with ten minutes remaining and he had a glorious chance to give the Gaels the lead with eight minutes remaining but hooked the free wide. Ballintubber ceased the initiative and a fine point from play by corner forward John Duffy and a monster free by young wing forward Daire Summervile edged them two clear. The Gaels had chances in the closing minutes but wides by Johnny Morrin and Paul McGing proved costly. Ballintubber closed out the game in injury time with two frees. The final act of the game was a point from play from Adrian Heneghan to leave the abbeysiders victorious 0-14 to 1-8.

A disappointing result considering all the chances for the Gaels who were best served by the outstanding Anthony Byrne, veterans Adrian Heneghan and James Fallon and the lively Jonathan Griffin. They must pick themselves up for the third round of the league at home to Moygownagh on Saturday evening.
