Intermediate team lose to Ballinrobe in the O'Mara Cup 3-6 to 3-17

November 8, 2018

This was always going to be a tough assignment for Mayo Gaels, taking on a senior team like Ballinrobe. Things were not helped when, on their first attack of the day, The Robe’s rampaging number 6 was pulled down in the square for a penalty. They dually put the ball in the net and added 2 more points before the Gaels got off the mark.

Danny Burke, who was the liveliest of the Gaels forwards, got things going with a well taken point. Ballinrobe, however, continued to dominate and score three more unanswered points. Danny Burke then swapped two more points with Ballinrobe’s no. 15 before Ballinrobe scored their second goal of the game. They followed this with the last point of the first half to leave the halftime scores at 0-3 to 2-09.

It is a credit to the Gaels lads that they didn’t drop the heads in the second half. In fact, they recovered two of the goals in the early stages. The first was a fisted goal from James Fallon after a high ball was sent into the goalmouth. The second was finished by Kevin Brett, following his introduction midway through the half.

Although Ballinrobe continued to add points to their score throughout the half, and were never in any real danger of being caught, the Gaels continued to battle on. Indeed it was the Gaels who got the last three scores of the day through Neill McGurrin who finished his goal chance very well and slotted two points from free kicks. A tough day out but plenty of lessons to be learned. The final score was Mayo Gaels 3-6 Ballinrobe 3-17.
