Junior "C" Championship: Clonmore 2-7 Fighting Cocks 2-7

November 8, 2018

This was a game where both teams enjoyed periods of scoring dominance and both teams also got a vital slice of luck.

The Cocks opened brightly to race into a 1-2 lead and it wasn't until the 15th minute that Dale McNamara opened Clonmore's account with a great long range point. We then dominated the scoring until half-time with points from JP Doyle, Willie Byrne, Jordan Kane and Paddy Gahan while JP got on the end of a good move to palm the ball to the net on the 25th minute. Clonmore led 1-5 to 1-3 at the break.

In a low scoring second half, the lively Adam Byrne extended our lead to 1-6 to 1-3 with a nice left foot shot on 42 minutes. Then the Cocks took over again with twin towers, Graham Whelan and Seamus Quirke, lording it at midfield and full forward Alan Quigley showing laser like accuracy with his left foot. The Cocks got their bit of luck on 45minutes when Paddy Byrne made a great save from a penalty only for the rebound to be bundled to the net in a goalmouth scramble. Quigley then kicked three points in a row – with all the frees being made easier by dissent from Clonmore players causing the Referee to move them to within kickable range. REPLAY is on THURSDAY, 10 July, at 7.15 in Tullow. Extra time is required.

At 2-7 to 1-6 on 54 minutes, things weren't looking good for Clonmore but then came our bit of luck. Substitute PJ Byrne attempted a long range shot for a point but didn't catch it properly. The ball took a low trajectory and was trickling into the goalkeeper's hands when it took a sudden bobble and ended up in the net. (Note to Groundsman – don't fill in that divot as we might need it again in the replay).

With only a point in it, Clonmore came back to life and launched a wave of attacks on the Cock's goal. Finally, in the dying seconds, a "45" from Jordan Kane dropped short and the ever resourceful Willie Byrne stuck up the fist and guided it over the bar for the equaliser. Relief all round as we live to fight another day.
