Junior Hurlers beaten by Killeigh

November 8, 2018

The juniors hurlers suffered an eleven point loss to Killeigh on Sunday morning in the second round of the championship. The game was played in good spirits and warm weather but a second half collapse by Edenderry led to a deserved win for Killeigh.

Edenderry started well and Enda Bagnell pointed from fifty yards after just thirty seconds but Killeigh responded on four minutes with a goal. Edenderry shook off that setback and David Hanlon pointed from a free on eleven minutes after a foul on Eoghan Kelly. Killeigh scored their first point of the game on sixteen minutes but it was quickly cancelled out with a Ger Hanlon pointed free after a foul on Stephen Murphy.

Two minutes later Edenderry took the lead when Eoghan Kelly shot from the 21 yard line and rattled the back of the net. Killeigh tagged on two more points from free’s before the half time break, while Eoghan Kelly pointed for the reds to give Edenderry the half time lead.

Half time:
Edenderry…. 1-4
Killeigh….. 1-3

Unfortunately for Edenderry, Eohan Kelly’s 28th minute point in the first half would be their last score until deep into injury time in the second half. With just twenty seconds gone Killeigh tied up the game with a great point. Disaster struck for the reds three minutes in when a routine sideline cut for Killeigh somehow ended up in the back of the net. Edenderry failed to recover from this and neither side managaed a score in the next ten minutes.

Killeigh added two points on the twelfth and fourteenth minute, one a free and four minutes later they got another goal which was the final nail in the coffin. Killeigh didnt relent and got stronger as the game wore on and four points in the final eight miniutes. Edenderry got their only score of the second half with the last puck of the game when David Hanlon pointed from a free.

Full time:
Edenderry…. 1-5
Killeigh….. 3-10

Edenderry will be disappointed with this loss as they played a good game in the first half but the second half was poor for the reds. They perhaps should have held a bigger lead at half time but missed three scoreable free’s but overall can have no complaints regarding the result as Killeigh were worthy of their win.
