Kiltormer take Junior C title

November 8, 2018

Another county title was delivered recently when Kiltormer defeated Annaghdown in the Co. Junior C final.  The game, played at a sunny Craughwell venue, was full of good quality hurling and both sides fielded a number of fine players (young and not so young!).  Kiltormer were first out of the blocks with a fine goal from Martin Kilkenny, but within minutes Annaghdown had struck back with a goal from Ronnie Newell and a point from Kieran O’Connor.  An injury to Ger Kelly resulted in the introduction of veteran Aidan Staunton and this certainly had an effect on the outcome of the game as he proceeded to dominate the half back position.  At this stage Justin Campbell had also come into the game and he tagged on 3 super points and this combined with a number of Damian Curley frees, and a super goal from Liam Kilkenny helped Kiltormer to a six point lead at half-time.

The second half was full of hard, committed hurling and try as they might Annaghdown couldn’t close the gap on the Kiltormer lads, who played some lovely hurling, in particular Tommy Kilkenny – who ended up with a tally of 5 points, and James Lynch who always looked classy at wing back.  Hurling Board Chairman presented the cup to Kiltormer captain Martin Kilkenny, as jubliant supporters and team-mates celebrated a fine victory.  It was a particularly special day for seven of the team as they had previously won All-Ireland Club senior medals back in 1992 – namely Aidan Staunton, Pakie Dervan, Ger Kelly, Damian Curley, Justin Campbell, Kevin Tierney and Fionan Curley, and also for manager John Goode who managed the team in ’92.
