Briderovers Ladies football & camogie notes

Our u14 girls have had a busy week playing the quarter and semi final of the county within three days.On wed  nite we were at home to Clonakilty B in the quarter final .Our girls were slow to settle  for the first 5 minutes but once they did they never looked back .In what was one of their best performances yet this year the girls simply took Clonakilty apart in the first half..They had great passages of football simple play with great passing movements  that resulted in plenty of scores. Chloe opened the scoring with a point  and within 5 minutes  herself and Jennifer had 1gl 5 clocked up between  them .The Rovers machine went on overdrive from here with most of  the forwards getting in on the scoring act.Clonaklilty  to be fair  tried to break our defence down on several occasions but our backs were having none of it .Aine was supberb in goals as was Cliona .Shannon and Dayna in the full back line .Our half back line of Eva Lauren and Claire were consistent throughout first out to every ball.Rebecca and Trish dominated the exchanges at centre field feeding their forwards great ball. Our half forward were simply on fire with  special mention to Katie who,s sheer determination and skill is an example to any player ,Mary played a wonderful open game on the wing and was involved in a lot of the scores and getting 4 points herself .Jennifer at centre forward controlled the game feeding  and receiving great passes  and ripped the Clonakilty back line  apart on 4 occasions  for 4 great goals  .Inside Sonya Chloe and Erin won great ball with Chloe moving out on numerous occasions  to help the half forwards and centre fields and her pin point accuracy  resulting in 5 great points ,Erin was on fire  getting her own personnel hat trick of three goals. We were ahead 6-10 to no score at half time .At the resumption  Jennifer and Claire were replaced by Margaret and Karen ,and shortly after  Sonya and Chloe made way  for Megan and Carmel and they all played starring roles when introduced .We finished the secomd half on a scoreline 7-14 to 2 goals .The downside to the game that Lauren at centre back picked up a hand injury but of course Lauren showing the great determined gutsy player she is said nothing until the game  was over .Unfortunatly the hand was badly sprained and ruled her out of the semi final.

Scores Jennifer 4-2,Erin 3-0.Chloe 0-5,Mary 0-4.Trish 0-2 and Katie 0-1

It was off to Ovens 3 days later for the semi final against Naomh Fionnbarra from Ballingeary.Far from the summer sunshine that we had all week the girls had to play in almost Winter conditions with a very strong wind and rain throughout. This was a nail biting game throughout ,we were playing with the wind in the first half and should have converted more scoring chances .We had some great passages of play and scored 3-2 in the first half but we were caught napping and left them back into it and conceded 2-1..One would have written off our girls at  half time considering they were against the wind but a few stiff words at half time and they came out a new team in the second half. A few positional changes with Jennifer falling back to the centre back position and dominated from the throw in  moving forward on several occasions  We fought for every ball and if it were not for the  shocking refereeing decisions we would be in a county final next week .Our girls were hard done by right throughout the game and I suppose the most controversial decision in the final minute when we were disallowed  a goal .Meg rattled the crossbar and chloe scored on the rebound only for the goal to be disallowed the referee claiming it was a square ball ,a decision that broke the Rovers girls hearts..We lost by the minimum 5-3 to 5-2 .Heartbreak for the girls who put up such a great performance.Scorers Jennifer 3-1 ,Erin 1-0 Meg 1-0 Chloe0-1 .Thanks to  all the supporters that braved the elements on the day and thanks to Dominic and John A who put so much work into training this team and to Mary and Shirley the reliable back room girls .Thanks also to Irene who took the girls for a training session the previous week .Panel A Cashman,D Connolly,C Murphy,S  Mulhall(c) L Friel,C Murphy,E O Leary,R Howard, T O Sullivan,M Hazelwood, J Cahill,K Connor,C O Flynn S Quirke, E O KeeffeK Sheehan C Mulcahy,M Geaney M Kelliher, S Sheehan.

On Sunday last a great occasion for our goalie Aine Cashman who took part in The primary game in Killarney at half time in the big match.Aine togged out in the number 1 jersey and accounted for herself very well  stopping the Kerry forwards on numerous occasions .Kerry were slightly stronger on the day but for Aine what an experience to play in front of such a big crowd and to fulfil her dream of playing in the Cork jersey hopefully the first of many for this great player.

On Saturday next Cork u14s play Dublin in the All-Ireland semifinal in Toomyvara Co Tipperary at 3.30 .We wish Jennifer Cahill  and her team mates the best of luck .
