Ladies win their 3rd league title

November 8, 2018

Our ladies senior football team had a successful year capturing the Senior League title for the first time since 2003. In a very competitive league programme they dropped just 5points to win the division by the absolute minimum at the expense of rivals Clonduff. The key game was undoubtedly the 2point away victory in Hilltown in which Castlewellan stamped their authority on the season. It was just reward for the girls who worked extremely hard all year, and begins to make reparations for the two previous years that produced no silverware. On the championship front a wonderful 7point victory over auld enemy Bryansford was the highlight of the season. This was followed by narrow 2point semi-final defeat, to eventual runaway final winners Clonduff, in an ultra-competitive game. Castlewellan can take great hope from this match and with further hard work and improvement surely the goal for 2009 is to recapture the Senior Championship from Clonduff’s three year stranglehold. The entire panel is to be commended but from a consistency point of view the outstanding players of the season were Aine Keown, Karen McMullan, Mairead Hardy, Deborah Keown, Lisa Morgan and Kelly O’Higgins. All in all a satisfactory season which augurs very well for next year.
