06/11/11 Leinster Junior Club C'ship: Clonmore 0-9 Capincur (Offaly) 0-11

Clonmore's Leinster adventure came to an end in DCP today as our injury hit team went down fighting in a game that, with a bit of luck, could easily have gone our way.

The first half was fairly even, but Cappincur's more direct style saw them kick some great long range points and their accurate freetaker, midfielder Peter Daly, punished a litany of fouls by the Clonmore backs by kicking five points from frees. Clonmore were trying very hard and moving the ball well but as soon as we hit the 45m line we were inclined to over elaborate and engage in too much lateral passing. Still, we kicked some good scores from Gavin Byrne (3,2f), John (2) & Enda McGrath and looked in a reasonable position at half-time, trailing by two points : 0-8 to 0-6.

Clonmore upped their game in the second half and within eight minutes had drawn level with a pointed free by Gavin and a fine point by Con Murphy from wide on the right. Cappincur responded well and kicked a couple of points but when Ronan Doyle raced forward to make it 0-10 to 0-9 on 46 minutes, it was anyones's game. Clonmore had several chances to equalise with an effort by Niall Humphries unluckily hitting the post, Gavin saw a long range shot drift a foot wide and Con just failed to find the unmarked David Mulvany on the edge of the square and a possible goal chance was lost. Cappincur got the final point of the game to run out narrow two point winners.

All the players gave their all and they can be very proud of themselves after a great year, winning Div 2 of the League and reaching the IFC final. They can hold their heads high and look forward with confidence to 2012.

PHOTO: Paul 'Fisher' Byrne, centre, had another fine game against Cappincur while cousin PJ (on left) is facing a operation on his injured knee in the next few days. We wish PJ a  speedy return to full fitness after a year in which he broke into the Intermediate team and starred for the U-21s at centre-forward.
