ACTIVE RETIREMENT BOOK LAUNCHED
Tuesday night November 25 saw one of the largest crowds in Mayo Abbey Resource centre since it opened. The event was the launching of a book written by members of Mayo Abbey Active Retirement Association.
The book is called ‘Mayo Abbey Childhood Memories’ and was launched by Ger Delaney, (South Mayo Family Research Centre). In his own witty way Ger had a comment on every one of the writers and their stories. Other speakers were Fr. Austin Fergus P.P. Martin Flatley, community council chairman, and  Tom Donohue, active retirement chairman who was MC.  Refreshments were served and Padraic Carney provided the music for the night. The launch coincided with the monthly Tuesday night dance and this month they were joined by active retirement members from Lahardaun, Kilmovee, Balla and Taugheen. These dances are becoming very popular, with groups now asking to be included but as space is limited they try to have different groups each time.  The book of 64 pages brings us back to an era gone by with stories of youth and schooldays memories. It also contains pictures of the members, taken from active retirement events.  Catherine Gibbons and Winnie Tunney took on the job of being the main driving force behind book.   The other committee members are, Mary Barrett, Tom Donoghue, Bridie Joyce, Martin Gibbons, Ger Maguire, Fr. Austin Fergus, and Jimmy Finn.  Next year the push will be for the other members to write their stories.
The book is on sale in Mayo Abbey Resource Centre or from members, cost € 10.
