Galway ‘A’ 1 – 2 Greenfields ‘A’(U16 League)

Greenfields got off to a flying start in their first league game of the season.

In a very entertaining U16 game both sides played adventurous hockey and with Freddie Timmins (Galway) and Dora Gorman (Greenfields), having a battle royal in the midfield this was always going to be a close game.

Galway had the best of the early part of the game but failed to convert any chances as Ciara Tracey in goal, who had an excellent game and Niamh Callanan and Niamh Codyre in defence broke up many Galway attacks. Elaine Carey in particular was very unlucky not to score. Greenfields took the lead midway through the 1st half when Cliodhna Kirk finished close in, after Dora Gorman had created mayhem in the Galway defence with a great run on goal. Towards the end of the half Dora Gorman extended Greenfields lead, with a fantastic strike after another exceptional solo effort.

The second half continued in the same vein as the 1st with both teams continuing to attack,  Galway were awarded a number of short corners, but with Ingrid Murphy, bravely charging down the striker each time, they failed to convert.

Galway continued to fight back and were rewarded in injury time when Michelle Carey was successful with their last short corner, to leave the score at 2-1 to Greenfields.

Others to shine for Greenfields were Sinead Heskin, Michelle Maher, Ciara Power and Clodagh Kennedy, while Galway were well served by Aoife Cunningham, Ruth O’Sullivan and Dee McMahon.

Galway ‘Firsts’ 0 – 2 Greenfields ‘Firsts’ (Division 1)

Greenfields Firsts got a good start to the season with a deserved victory over local side Galway. Galway piled on the pressure from the tip off for the opening five minutes while the Greenfields defence led by Aine Collins defended well. A quick break by Mary Healy up the right wing led to a Dora Gorman goal. Although Galway continued to pile on the pressure for the remainder of the first half they were unlucky not to convert an equaliser. After the break both sides worked tirelessly with Greenfields captain Neasa McGettigan controlling midfield confidently. Greenfield’s secured their victory with a well executed short corner giving Dora Gorman her second. New coach Bryan Madden can be content with this fine performance.

Yeats (Sligo) 1 – 2 Greenfields ‘Seconds’ (Division 1)

Greenfields Second senior team matched the Firsts performance with a great victory over Sligo’s Yeats County. This close faught match saw a young Greenfields side led by Olive Healy overcome the experienced Yeats County 2 goals to 1.  An early goal from Mary Healy saw Greenfields take the lead with  Dina Darcy securing the two one victory. Yeats worked hard to come back but superb saves by Aoife Hernon in goals kept them at bay.
