MFC B: Clonmore 4-14 MLR 2-3

November 8, 2018

Mount Leinster Rangers      2-3       Clonmore     4-14

Clonmore’s minor team continued their good form in the Minor “B” Championship with a comprehensive win over a very young Mount Leinster Rangers team in Borris on Monday evening, the home team playing the whole first half with only 14 players.

Playing a brand of fast, skilful football, Clonmore kept the scoreboard operator busy and had scored 2-12 by half-time with Rangers failing to raise a flag. Clonmore’s scorers were Shane McGrath with 2-1, Michael Murray 0-3, PJ Byrne 0-2, Shane Howard 0-2, David McCarney and Darren McGrath.

The game was over as a contest at this stage but fair play to Rangers, they came out with all guns blazing in the second half. Now restored to 15 players, Rangers rocked Clonmore with two quick goals from Thomas Huff and Kieran Hayes and a point from Conor Hayes to make it 2-12 to 2-1 after 40 minutes. However, any hope of a revival were quickly snuffed out with Clonmore’s Darren McGrath and Willie Byrne slotting over a couple of classy points before Shane McGrath completed his hat-trick when a speculative cross-shot ended up in the net. Willie Byrne, who was now playing at centre field, finished Clonmore’s scoring with a rocket of a shot to the roof of Paul Kiernan’s net before Conor Fenlon and Conor Hayes had two late points for the never-say-die Rangers team.

Clonmore’s win was based on sound defence with Shane Murphy & Martin Byrne outstanding in the centre, the Hickey brothers combining well on the right wing and Willie Byrne & David Krausse steady on the left. At midfield the combination of the stylish Niall Humphries and the physically strong Michael Murray worked well, while up-front Shane Howard was a class act and was well supported by Darren McGrath, PJ Byrne and the lively three goal hero, Shane McGrath.

For Mount Leinster Rangers, Paul Kiernan was sound in goal, while central defenders Anthony Murphy & Paul Cody, midfielders Tom Huff & Michael Doyle and Conor Hayes in attack all looked good players and could not be faulted for effort.
