Minor League: Clonmore 2-8 Slaney Rangers 2-8

November 8, 2018

The Minor team put on a display of skill, teamwork and never-say-die attitude to earn

a deserved draw against Slaney Rangers in Tullow on Wednesday evening and were unlucky

not to win the game.

Clonmore opening brightly and were 1-3 to 0-1 up after 17 minutes thanks to points from

Darren Daly, Dale McNamara and Adam Byrne and a well taken goal by wing half back Jason Byrne.

Slaney came back to level just before half-time but in the dying seconds of the half, two lads

just out of U-14 ranks, Josh Bowes and Francie Whelan, put over a couple of stylish points to

put us 1-5 to 1-3 ahead at the break.

In spite of playing against a strong wind and a physically stronger Slaney team, the Clonmore

lads gave as good as they got in the second half and extended the lead to 2-7 to 1-5 with a

tidy Francie Whelan goal on 48 minutes. The Clonmore backs were outstanding in the second half,

blocking and tackling as if their lives depended on it, and Michael Kealy made some great saves

in goal. With the scores level at 2-7 apiece on 59 minutes, an Adam Byrne free put us a point

ahead and we looked like we might snatch a famous victory. Unfortunately, deep into injury time

Slaney knocked over the equaliser for what was probably a fair result on the night – 2-8 apiece.

With a team which included five 15 year olds, this was an excellent performance and one which

augurs well for the season ahead. Well done to players and mentors, Des Byrne and John Doyle.
