Minors beaten amid controversy

November 8, 2018

Edenderry minors suffered their first defeat in this years championship with a 6 point loss to St Vincents. However there was only 25 minutes played in the second half when Edenderry had all the momentum.

Edenderry opened the scoring when Derek Kelly pointed but Vincents hit back with 3 points and wasted very little ball. Dan Ryan put Edenderry back ahead when be blasted home a good goal but unfortunately for the reds Vincents once again battled hard and pulled ahead with a couple of good points. Stuart Cullen(2), Dan Ryan, Derek Kelly and a Ciaran Hurley free put Edenderry in front by 1 point at the half time break.

Half time:
Edenderry 1-6 0-8 St Vincents

St Vincents started the second half in what could only be described as extraordinary fashion and absolutely blitzed Edenderry scoring 2-7 without reply. However both of the goals came in controversial circumstances as the ball was clearly thrown with no underhand striking action. Edenderry got their first scores of the second half when Stuart Cullen notched up another 2 points and then was put through for Edenderry second goal. Ciaran Hurley kicked two more free’s but Vincents once again got in for another soft goal before tagging on two more points. Trailing 3-17 to 2-10, Sean Doyle got through one on one but unfortunately shot wide before making amends just one minute later, scoring and excellent point and blasting the ball into the roof of the net to leave just 6 points between the teams.

Edenderry were now carrying the momentum when confusion incurred and the final whistle was blown after just 24 minutes and 56 seconds gone. Edenderry certainly could have still salvaged something from the game as they were finding it easier to get in at the goals but unfortunately nothing came of the situation.
Overall Edenderry can be happy with the way they battled for the last 10 minutes when the chips were down but ultimately the opening 15 minutes of the second half cost them dearly as they were completely destroyed.
