Minors v O'Connells/Stabannon

November 8, 2018

Minors win top of table clash

Our minors travelled to the Grove for their top of the table clash against an O’Connells / Stabannon combination and had a resounding victory on a scoreline of 4-12 to 1-6. The O’Connells / Stabannon combination had, like us, won their first two games and to add further spice to the encounter we are drawn against each other in the first round of the championship. Before the game we sffered a blow when Nicholas O’Callaghan was unavailable due to an injury picked up playing for The Marist earlier in the day. Our troubles looked to have increased when our captain Niall Ferguson suffered a severe nose bleed during the warmup and looked as if he too would be unable to play but thankfully the nose bleed subsided and Niall took his place at centre half back.

Our early dominance wasn’t reflected on the scoreboard and after 15 minutes we led 1-3 to 1-1.However a much improved performance over the next 15 minutes gave us a commanding half time lead of 3-6 to 1-3. Our goals were courtesy of Mark Gray, Gary Shevlin and Dean Hoey with Niall Ferguson scoring a memorable point after a 60 yard solo.

We continued our dominance in the second half as we added an additional 1-6 while we restricted the opposition to just 3 points with our goal being scored by Conor Smith. Conor Oakes, operating from wing back, scored another memorable point and it was followed by an Andrew Coleman styled salute to his adoring fans!! Special mention must be given to Andrew Rafferty, who made his minor team debut and carried out his goalkeeping duties with some aplomb.
