Moydow Harpers V Mostrim (Reserve League 3) - Match report

November 7, 2018

Mostrim 3-10     Moydow Harpers 0-03

Moydow Harpers Reserve League 3 team went down to a strong and lively Mostrim outfit on Sunday last at Devine Park.

As the score-line would suggest, there were little positives to take from the Harpers first competitive outing in 2015. However, it was a day that Moydow welcomed debutants Keelan Dowd, Liam Maguire and Christopher Hewitt to the fold. In addition, Terry Bullett made his long awaited return following a brief experimentation with Australian rules over the last number of years.

As always in this reserve league, a lot of players found themselves playing in unaccustomed positions and this might explain the result. However, there is plenty of potential in these players and it won’t be long before the fruits of training will be realised.

The match started in the worst possible way for the Harpers conceding an opportunist goal in the first 5 minutes. The Harpers were losing the breaks around the pitch at this stage and it was clear from an early stage that more cohesion between forwards and backs would be required to break through the Mostrim defence.

Mostrim, with a number of ex-senior players in their squad dominated position and used the ball with greater efficiency than the Harpers. Moydow worked hard to quell the onslaught of attacks but conceded another fortuitous goal half-way through the first half. At the other end of the pitch, numerous squandered opportunities further dampened the Harpers spirit.

Half Time: Mostrim 2-05 Moydow Harpers 0-01

Half time allowed Moydow manager Paddy Dowd to introduce fresh legs. Sean Farrell, Trevor Higgins and Ronan Mc an Bheatha were given their chance from the bench. The second half started brightly with the Harpers winning more primary possession. However, now playing against a stiff breeze, they struggled to convert possession into scores.

The Harpers never give up but with an uphill climb, it was never going to be easy. Towards the end, tired legs from the Harpers showed and Mostrim capitalised with good counter-attacking play which sealed the result.

Next up in Reserve league 3 is Sean Connollys in Moydow Park next Sunday at 2pm.
