Moydow Harpers Vs Carrickedmond (Division 2) - Match Report

November 7, 2018

Moydow Harpers 0-04                   Carrickedmond 2-10

The Harpers had their first home tie of the year when they welcomed last year’s Intermediate finalists to new developed Moydow Park on Saturday evening last. This was always going to be a step up in class for Moydow but also a good opportunity to assess their game against the league & championship favourites.

The game started with Carrickedmond holding the majority of possession. However, the Harpers were psyched up and some resilient defending limited the visitors to just 3 points in the first 15 minutes of play.

With Tom Hobin and Shane Connell playing reserved roles and helping in the defensive effort, the remaining forwards were outnumbered in their efforts to win and attack the Carrickedmond goal. However, on a couple of occasions, some strong runs from Mark Quinn and Cathal Hilliard reaped dividends and the Harpers registered 2 points midway through the half.

Carrickedmond responded with a well taken point before the Harpers were dealt a sickening blow when a high ball into the Moydow square was flicked to the back of the net by a Carrickedmond forward. The visitors finished the half strong adding an additional 2 points.

Half Time: Moydow Harpers  0-02      Carrickedmond  1-06

Carrickedmond started the second half like they finished the first and dominated possession. However, the Harpers defence remained resilient and snuffed out many attacking treats through disciplined tackling and a never say die attitude.

The Harpers were still being starved of possession in the forward line and had limited opportunities for registering further scores. However, following a dubious penalty decision for Carrickedmond, Moydow responded almost immediately with a point from super sub Colin Clyne and a free from Mark Quinn.

Like the first half, Carrickedmond finished strong adding further points to leave 12 points between the sides at the final whistle.

This was a good learning experience for the Harpers and we should see the benefit of this over the coming months.
