Limerick FC are in Airtricity League action away to Waterford Utd on Friday night KO 7.45pm in the RSC. Limerick FC are currently fifth in the table 4 points behind Waterford and a win could see Limerick go back to fourth in the league just 1 point off the playoff spot with 6 league games left, the Super Blues are very much in the promotion race. Pat Scully said’ We were not at our best against Cork City and we cannot look to start as slow against third placed Waterford this weekend. Limerick FC had once very young side on display against a much older more experienced Mervue side who were 2nd in the table going into the match. Limerick were unlucky to lose this game and should have taken at least a draw from their older counterparts.
This U-20 game opened in heavy rain and a strong wind favoured Limerick FC for the first twenty minutes. Mervue United travelled with a strong team that contained six players that started in their first division game last Friday night including Dan Cunningham, brother of Ireland and Manchester City player, Greg Cunningham.
Limerick FC had the best of the early exchanges and after 20 minutes opened their account with a bizarre goal. Goalkeeper, Shane Cusack’s kick out carried on the wind and landed in the opposite penalty area where the bounce deceived Conor Gleeson in the Mervue goal and the ball was finished into the net by Cillian O Connor. Brian McGorrian created a good chance for himself on 30 minutes but his shot was well saved. On 40 minutes Shane Cusack dived full stretch to divert a shot by Mike Elwood around the post. At half time it remained 1-0 to Limerick FC.
On the resumption Limerick sought to increase their lead and a shot by Cillian O Connor was well saved by the Mervue keeper. The same player turned well on the ball after 20 minutes but his effort went wide at the near posr. In the space of ten minutes Mervue turned this game on its head. A free kick was spilled by Shane Cusack and Mike Collins pounced to score from close in. Shortly after Dan Cunningham hit a sweet strike from outside the box that flew into the bottom corner. Limerick FC pushed hard for an equaliser, but failed to make any clear cut chances. The physical strength of the Mervue side ensured they ran out 2-1 winners. Limerick’s man of the match was Sean O Callaghan. Limerick are playing Salthill Devon at home next Sunday KO 2pm in Annacotty.

Donal Magees young side were unlucky not to take all 3 points from their away trip to Tallaght Stadium in Dublin on Saturday afternoon. Dave McGrath had the best of the Limerick chances in what was a very tight game that finished scoreless. As is the ethos at the club Limerick played some beautiful soccer at times and can be very happy with their afternoons work. Limerick FC A Team are at home to Bray Wanderers in Shannon Hibernians ground next Saturday at 2pm.

Cork City won at Jackman Park last Friday night as the home side were hit with a blitz attack, finding themselves 3-0 in the first 15 minutes. Goals from Graham Cummins, and a brace from Davin O’Neill meant an excellent late free kick from Bobby Ryan was nothing but a consolation. Limerick FC were without club captain Pat Purcell at centre half who has been Limericks best player this season and experienced centre half Dave Rodgers due to suspension. Limerick lost central midfielder John Sullivan late due to a hamstring strain.
Cork started the brighter and began to look menacing from the very first minute as Graham Cummins aerial threat seemed to frustrate Limerick as cross after cross found the target man. It was this exact route which opened the scoring for the visitors, as a looped cross from Shane Barrett was met excellently by Cummins, who smashed his header into the top corner.
A second was only minutes away as some very poor defending let Davin O’Neill stroll in from the wing through the Limerick backline before slotting past Dave Ryan in the Limerick goal.
As if the home fans weren’t agitated enough, a third followed almost immediately. Ten minutes had barely elapsed when Davin O’Neill was picked out, unmarked, to volley home across goal and into the bottom corner, much to the delight of the away support.
Limerick began to find their feet, although they lacked any real threat. The always reliable John Tierney was Limericks’ highlight, his pace causing trouble for the Cork side, although with little support, the forward couldn’t turn provider. Cork soaked up any Limerick attack and passed around comfortably to see out the remainder of the half.
The introduction of young David O’Leary was a plus for Limerick, the eighteen year old was the victim of a bad challenge from Mervue United last month and had only resumed training the week before this fixture. Limerick were much the best in the second half as Cork sat back to protect their lead.
Stephen O’Flynn came close for the home side, his ambitious volley from all of forty yards nearly caught out McNulty, but the Cork stopper prevented the goal. John Tierneys late bursts were tireless and he was unlucky along with Shane Clarke on several occasions as the Cork defenders threw themselves in front of shot after shot and when the ball did find its way past the defenders Cork keeper McNulty was on hand to frustrate the home side, When McNulty was beaten the crossbar came to Corks aid on 2 occasions.
After Cork appeared to have closed out the game, Limerick got a free kick on the edge of the box, up stepped substitute Bobby Ryan, and the Limerick native blasted his shot into the bottom corner. Limerick got their goal, but it had arrived far too late for them to contemplate a comeback of any proportion. Cork now lie only a point behind Limerick, and their recent form see’s them back with a chance of playoffs. Limerick FC now have a must win game against Waterford Utd next Friday night away in Waterford.
