125 Birthday
Last weekend marked exactly 125 years since the founding of Tullamore GAA Club. Our under 8 and under 12 footballers played Rhode on Saturday morning to mark 125 years of both clubs. Tullamore had over seventy players between both teams and all players enjoyed game time. Following the games there was a small presentation to both teams and goodies for all. We would like to thank Rhode GAA Club and their teams mentors and players for coming to Tullamore to join in on this wonderful occasion. Thank you also to all our own mentors and players and to referees Eddie Dunne, John Hickey and James Buckley. Thank you to Mervyn Griffin, Aideen Marron and Shaun Martin for supplying the tea/coffee for parents. On Saturday evening the club held a special club mass to mark the 125th anniversary and to remember all the deceased members of the club. The mass took place in the Social Centre and was celebrated by Fr. Séan Heaney. Many people contributed to a beautiful ceremony and we must thank them all. Firstly thank you to Fr. Heaney for saying mass and for his guidance and advice in preparation for it. Thank you to the Eucharistic Ministers and to our alter servers Ciarán, Tomás and Jonathon. Thank you to our readers Jim Buckley, Tom Martin, Caoimhe and Muireann Griffin, Oisín Keenan Martin, Phil O’Reilly Snr, Padraig Smollen and Tom Furlong. Thank you to all gift bearers and to narrator Seamus Allen. Senior Players Brian O’Reilly and Shane Kelly brought a hurl and football to the alter which symbolise both codes played in the club, Jack O’Connor brought up the Blue Tullamore Jersey with Gerry Conway who carried an old committee minutes book to remember all the past and current committees which have served the club. Adam Martin brought a picture of the youngest team in the club with Jim Loughman who carried a picture of a juvenile team from the fifties. Grace Kelly and Tamara Daly brought up the camogie and ladies football jerseys which represented both clubs proud association with the mens club. Finally the bread and wine was brought to the Alter by Club Chairman Fergal McKeon and Camogie Secretary Mary Spollen. Both clubs celebrate significant birthdays this year with the camogie club celebrating its 40th anniversary. The ceremony was made extra special with the beautiful music organised by Joe Egan. Thanks to the Family Mass Choir and friends who celebrated the mass with us. A final word of thanks to all who came and to Paddy Harvey, Mary Spollen, Patricia Marron and Dermot Martin who helped with the teas afterwards. It was also lovely to see Martin Furlong home from America and to all the old and familiar faces, we hope you all enjoyed your chat reminiscing about the past and looking at the old photographs.
