Offaly Bow out of Leinster U21 Football Championship

Offaly bowed out of the Leinster U21 Football Championship with a 2 point defeat by Carlow after extra-time in O’Connor Pk on Saturday (March 6th).

 

Offaly got off to the worst possible start and found themselves 1-5 to 0-1 in arrears after 12 minutes.  The Carlow goal coming from Eddie Byrne after just 2 minutes.  Offaly battled back and were just give in arrears at the break 1-8 to 0-6.

 

On the resumption Carlow extended their lead to 1-11 to 0-7 after just 8 minutes and Offaly looked dead and buried.  However, four points in quick succession saw Offaly have the margin down to just a goal with 9 minutes left.  Both sides were reduced to 14 men when Offaly’s Colin Egan and Carlow’s Daniel St Ledger received red cards.  Then, Michael Brazil found the net to level matters, after great work by Anton Sullivan.  That was to be the last score of the game and extra time was needed to separate the sides.

 

Offaly led at half time in extra time by 1-14 to 1-12.  Offaly looked to be on their way to victory as they led by 1-15 to 1-13 with just three minutes left, but a Brendan Murphy goal for Carlow set them up for a semi-final meeting with Dublin
