Roche were asked to coordinate their first round games for the U9 team in Darver on Monday 19th April and as the club usually does obliged and so Gerry Steward added to his heavy coaching roll to organising this event.

On a lovely evening for football St Kevins with two teams, Cuchulainn Gaels and Roche Emmets with a team each served up an enjoyable evening for parents and friends there to support them.

On Sunday 18th April at 11am Roche U7’s began their 2010 season in Dunleer after weeks of pre-season indoor and outdoor training! The weather was dry, bright but slightly sharp in the spring morning.

The host club Lannleire had two pitches well set out and the games were well arranged. Their efforts did deserve the third club turning up but it was not to be and so Roche and Lannleire played four games between the two teams from each club. Roche had 18 players and Lannleire with 14 added three ‘hairy’ U-7’s (with the agreement of both teams, they played an U-8 and U-9 in goals) to allow all the U-7’s play two games each.

To avoid Roche suffering any home town refereeing decisions they brought their own! Caoimhín Reilly and Tiarnán Guirk, two 13 year old referees fresh from the U-7/8 Referees Course, plus Paul Carroll, also 13, showed how well they could referee this age group and took the pressure off the team mentors. They shared out the duties over the four games.

The games had all the skills needed by the players of this age group; lots of high, chest and low catching, good kick passing, some well worked hand passing, fine point taking, a fair idea of space and the zone rules in these games.

Roche 1: Tiarnán Kavanagh, Killian Carroll 1pt, Killian McKay 1pt, Mark Byrne 4-1, Dáire Reilly 1pt, Jack McKay 2pts, James McDonald, Chris Carthy, Andrew McKay.

Roche 2: Jason McAleer, Anna McArdle 1-1, Fionnan McGuirk 1-2, Dearbheal McGuirk, Mickey McCourt 3-4, Gabriel Cleary, Oísin Murphy, Neil Gartlan, Ben Gartlan.

Results:

Three points were awarded for a goal and three points for each point scored as per rules.

Roche1 points total = 15 (FT 2-3 HT 2-2) Lannleire1 points total = 6 (FT 1-1 HT 0-0)

Roche1 points total = 15 (FT 2-3) Lannleire2 points total = 9 (FT 0-3)

Roche2 points total = 34 (FT 5-6 HT 3-3) Lannleire2 points total = 36 (FT 3-9 HT 1-1)

(The ref made the score 36 to 36 as he added two points for skills shown as instructed on his refereeing course)

Roche2 points total = 15 (FT 2-3 HT 2-2) Lannleire1 points total = 6 (FT 1-1 HT 0-0)

This was a most enjoyable experience for the players and the large attendance of parents and it was a very well hosted event by the Lannleire club and especially the U7 mentors.
