Rhode V Tullamore

Rhode Senior footballers gained their first brace of points in this year’s championship when they recorded a 15 point win over Tullamore in Rhode on Saturday evening. It was a great occasion with both clubs celebrating their 125th anniversary as both clubs were formed in 1888. A great crowd attended and weather was very good despite a strong breeze. Rhode made a great start to and led by 0-10 to 0-1 at the interval. The second was better contested and two late goals from Glen O’Connell and the other was scored by Niall Darby. The game was played at Fr. Dowling Park for the first ever time a senior championship was played at home in conjunction with the Gathering festival which took place in Rhode over the weekend. The club would like to thank the Tullamore Club for their cooperation in the game been played in Rhode and thanks especially to their Chairman Fergal McKeown and Senior team manager John Rouse. After the game both teams were treated to a meal and thanks to Colm Killeen Bar and Lounge ‘The Village Inn’ The club would like to the Offaly GAA Board and their CCCC committee in particular for organising with Tullamore that this game to be played in Rhode and for sending out their officials stream headed by Andy Gallagher and Jimmy Hogan for doing the gate. The grounds were in excellent condition for the game and special thanks to FAS man Dickie Conroy and club committee member Declan Nolan who had the field in excellent condition all over the weekend, thanks also expressed the all the committee members who worked over the past few weeks in getting the pitch looking so well and Club Chairman James Murphy has to be applauded for his timely work leadership, special thanks to the programme sellers who had a tough job, Stephen Keogh for his music and amplification, Stephen Darby for doing MC, the Gathering committee for their great help, the Clara team band for their excellent contribution on the proceedings and the local press. Niall Murphy for looking after the content of the very good programme and the publication of same, FAS workers under the supervision of Mary Pender for their work and thanks to the Clonmore Harp for providing stewards as part of the Gathering committee. To the local press and Vincent McEvoy thanks very much and last but not least to our supporters and those who travelled from far and wide to the game and for the weekend.
