Seniors win in League:Our seniors made it two wins out of two in the Division 2 League on Friday night when they beat Aughavas by 1-13 to 0-13. This was a good close game right through and it was a significant win for a number of reasons. We were short a few players through injury and a few of those who played were carrying injuries as well. We fell behind early on and in fact were in arrears for three quarters of the game. However it was a great fighting performance and after we took the lead on no less than three occasions in the second half, Aughavas leveled again but still we fought back again. Extra time has often been unkind to us; particularly in last year’s League clash with Cloone where we lost our lead in extra time and effectively lost promotion as a result. On Friday night the opposite was the case as we took the lead finally with time almost up but we added two points in extra time to ensure victory.
While the backs didn’t perform too well in the first half they really won this game for us in the last ten minutes when they played superbly to contain Aughavas as they sought an equalizer. Philip Farrelly made one crucial save in the first half when a goal would have done us damage. Ciaran Murray was good all through in defence. We struggled at midfield until the latter period when Wayne McKeon improved the situation greatly. Brian Cafferty was the forward who stood out for us and his four points from play, in particular the second last score of the game was crucial. Finnian Sharpley made an impression also when he came on.
Juniors get first win in Div 3:Vodafone did well on this match with the number of phone calls it took before the match to try and resurrect fifteen players. When it was nearly time to take the field we had thirteen players and given the trouncing we got in our first three matches in this division it seemed a hopeless cause. However, sometimes when all seems to be working against one, things work out better. The fifteen players that did turn up, plus two subs we had in the end, played magnificently. Mohill got the first two points but got no more in the first half and Joe McTague, Éamon Walsh and Brian Cafferty, from a free, left it 0-3 to 0-2 at half time.
In the second half points came from Brian Cafferty, three in a row from Seán McCartin, the first from a free and then two good ones from play. Then Séamus Donnelly added another good one and Brian Cafferty finished with another to leave it 0-9 to 0-6 at the finish. A most welcome and much improved performance from this team. The backs were all good with David Leyden and Joe McTague especially good. Anthony McTague had a great game at midfield and Brian Cafferty, Seán McCartin and Éamon Walsh were best in attack. Most second teams have a good sprinkling of first team players and if the team performs well you can usually attribute that to the contribution of the senior players on the team. Amazingly this victory was achieved with only two players on duty who were on the starting fifteen for the senior team on the previous evening. Race Night in Ballinamore:Saturday June 14 is the date for our race night in Prior’s and you can buy a dog for €10 from any club member. This event will be on the eve of Leitrim’s Connacht Championship clash with Galway in Pearse Stadium. It is always a good social event also so please make a note of it.
Under 12 Football:Under 12 League begins with a game against St Mary’s in Carrick on Friday and another game at home on Monday next, both games at 7.00.
Schools Football:The boys’ schools team are in the Division 1 Final against Mohill on Monday next. The game is in Fenagh, time to be confirmed. All support would be appreciated. The team has beaten Kinlough, Carrick, Carrigallen and Manorhamilton on their way to the Final.
Obair sa Pairc:Great to see big progress on the Park. The steel for the stand has been erected this week and the roof should be up by next week. The dressingrooms have already taken shape and the work is expected to be completed by end of July.
