THE NEALE  0—10    V   ISLANDEADY  1—08

The Neale lost by the minimum to Islandeady in the league last Saturday evening. Islandeady scored a point from the throw in and followed it with a good point from play to leave them two points ahead after five minutes. Simon Ryan who was to have a great game replied with a point for the home side. Islandeady were on top now and scored two unanswered points and this could have been more but for some wasteful shooting. The Neale slowly began to get to grips at midfield and held there opponents scoreless while they scored five on the bounce to lead 0—06 to 0—04 at half time. Simon Ryan with three (1 free), Paddy Hopkins and Eoin Hughes were the scorers.

Simon with a very good point extended the Neale’s lead to three points. Two Islandeady points at the end of the first quarter once again left the minimum between the sides. The Neale introduced Daragh Walsh for the injuried Padraig Mc Grath and it was his intervention that lead to Hopkins scoring a wonderful point from an acute angle. Mike Fleming got a good point on the run to leave the Neale three points ahead 0—09 to 0—06 with nine minutes remaining. Islandeady scored two points and followed it with a goal to leave them 1—08 to 0—9 ahead heading for the final whistle. A pointed Simon Ryan free reduced the arrears and try as they might they could not get the equalising point. On the night the defence played well, midfield had it’s moments while David Morrin and man-of-the-match Simon Ryan stood out. This display was a big improvement and it looks like we are heading in the right direction.

The Neale lined out as follows: Keith Hennelly, Ciaran Hughes, Donal Hughes, Padraig Mc Grath, Pat Casey, John Heskin, Brian O’ Connell, Eoin Hughes(0—01), Peter Cosgrave, Simon Ryan(0—06,2frees), David Morrin, Paddy Hopkins(0—2,1free), Mike Fleming(0—01) and Paul Killeen. Subs used Daragh Walsh for Padraig Mc Grath(injuried). Not used Neil Varley, Robert Kennedy, Neil O’ Brien, Mike Lynagh, Mike Waldron and James Biggins,

During the week the under 14’s were beaten by a strong Ballinrobe side. Those to play well were Daniel Keane, David Mc Grath, Aaron Killeen, Ollie Warde and Jamie O’ Donnell.

The minors played Achill in the league and were easy winners on a score line of 3—16 to 1—06. The Neale had there best performers in James Biggins, Gareth O’ Grady, Shane O’ Malley, Daragh Walsh, Dylan Fallon and Niall Coen.
