Seamus Doyle R.I.P

November 8, 2018

It was with great regret when the news filtered though on the death of Seamus Doyle in his 95th year. Seamus had been in bad health for the last few months and he died peacefully on Friday. A man of great wit and he was a pleasure to meet up with whether that was at a match, work, socially or around the village or at his home in Marian Terrace. He was a great father, grandfather, husband to all his family and a great provider for them. He was a great footballer in his early days and played for Rhode for close to 25 years in the thirties, forties and early fifties. He was a very valuable player and he won championships as a half-forward, corner-forward and a goalkeeper. He was part of the championship teams who won in 1939, 1940, 1944 and 1949 and was part of the teams beaten in 1945, 1946, 1948 and 1951. He was the top scorer in the 1944 final and kept a clean sheet in goals in the 1949 final. Seamus was a lifelong member of the club and was a regular at all Rhode and Offaly games until a few years ago. Seamus last played for Rhode in 1953. Seamus was laid to rest on Sunday in Rhode cemetery where the Rhode Club held a guard of honour for him along with his old team mates. He is the last surviving member of the Rhode championship winning team of 1939 and 1940. All at Rhode GAA have lost a great and honourable friend and he will be sadly missed by all of us who were lucky enough to have known him. May He Rest In Peace

Sympathy is also extended to the Dunne family of Marian Terrace on the death of their mother Phil whose remains were interred in Rhode cemetery on Friday. The late Phil was a wonderful person and one of the most respected ladies in the community and indeed all over the neighbouring area's as well. She will be sadly missed by all of us who were lucky enough to have known her especially by her family. May She Rest In Peace.

Sympathy is extended to the Dunne family of Daingean and Croghan on the death of Sonny Dunne who remains were interred to Croghan cemetery during the week.
