Senior Footballers draw with Walsh Island

November 8, 2018

Edenderry seniors gained their first point of the league campaign on Friday night with a draw against Walsh Island. This was a game of two halves with Edenderry the stronger in the first half but they had to hang on late in the second half when Walsh Island kicked 6 unanswered points.

The reds started brightly and where ahead inside forty seconds when Ciaran Hurley pointed. Walsh Island's Colm Gavin equalised before Stuart Cullen once again put the reds back on top. Edenderry had the chance for a goal when some great work from Martin Keogh & Stuart Cullen put Dean Cummins through on goal but his shot was well saved by Ian Duffy.

Persistance paid off and again some great work from Stuart Cullen lead to Edenderry's goal when he went on a solo run and finished to the roof of the net. Two further points from Stuart Cullen and Martin Keogh extended the reds lead before Gary Comerford pulled one back. Ciaran Hurley pointed two free's for Edenderry and Willie Mulhall pointed one for Walsh Island leaving the half time score 1-6 to 0-03.

Colm Cummins was introduced at half time for Dean Cummins. Colm Gavin kicked two great points for Walsh Island before another Ciaran Hurley free kick extended the reds lead. Willie Mulhall scored for Walsh Island but then Derek Kelly scored for Edenderry after some great work again from Martin Keogh. However this would prove to be Edenderry's last score of the game and 4 unanswered points from the boot of Willie Mulhall left the minimal between the sides.

Some sloppy play from Edenderry had the backs under pressure and with Stuart Cullen now been marked by two players scores were hard to come by. Walsh Island were now winning the midfield battle and caught 5 kickouts in a row before Matthew O'Connor kicked the equalising point for Walsh Island. Willie Mulhall had the chance to kick the winning point after Walsh Island were awarded another soft free but fortunatly for the reds it went wide.

Overall Edenderry can be happy with their first half performance but they will need to improve their fitness as it was that that ultimately cost them the game. On the positve side Stuart Cullen & Ciaran Hurley showed their potential and cause all sorts of problems for Walsh Islands defence. Derek Kelly was excellent throughout with some great high fielding and powerful forward runs.
Captain for the night Johnny Hurst produced another solid display while the game also heralded the return to action for Stephen Murphy and Colm Byrne.
