Seniors suffer second defeat in League

November 8, 2018

Edenderry seniors suffered their second league defeat of 2012 with a six point loss to Ballycumber on Sunday afternoon. In what was a very poor game of football it was Ballycumber who were hungrier and wanted it more on the day and deservedly ran out six point winners.

It took eight minutes for the opening score to arrive and it did so from a free for Ballycumber. Edenderry attacked straight from the kick-out but when the play broke down a long ball into the full forward resulted in a goal for Ballycumber.

Dan Ryan pointed Edenderry’s first of the game in the tenth minute but it would be eleven minutes before either side could muster up another chance. Ciaran Hurley scored a point from a free in the twenty first minute and eight minutes later Ballycumber scored their second point of the game. On the stroke of half time a sweeping move, one of very few, saw some great play from Dan Nolan, Peter O’Neill and Stephen Guing put through Philip Farrell who finished expertly to the back of the net to level the game.

Deep into injury time Edenderry were on the attack but once again when play broke down a quick ball down the field led to a Ballycumber man fisting into an open goal.

Half Time:
Edenderry 1-2 2-2 Ballycumber

Edenderry introduced Stephen Abbott and Adrian Murphy for Peter O’Neill and John Gorman at half time but again it was Ballycumber who made the brighter start pointing after just two minutes. Philip Farrell pulled on back for the reds in the sixth minute with a pointed free but Ballycumber hit back with two points in two minutes.

In the thirteenth minute Edenderry hit their second of the half when Philip Farrell added his second point of the game but it would be another eleven minutes before Edenderry would register a score. Ballycumber stretched their lead to six points before a well taken Dan Nolan point in the twenty fourth minute.

In stoppage time a Colm Quinn point restored Ballycumber’s six point advantage.

Overall Edenderry can have little complaints about the result as Ballycumber were deserving winners and could have won by more. The reds will have to improve dramatically in their next game in order to get back to winning ways. One positive to come from the game was Adrian Murphy making his first appearance since suffering a terrible injury in June 2010.
