Clonmore extend winning run

St Andrews                          1-5

Clonmore                             0-9

Clonmore recorded their fourth League win in a row at McGrath Park on Sunday evening last, and remarkably, all wins have been achieved by the narrowest of margins. Clonmore’s only defeat so far was to Ballon, on the opening day of the season, also by a single point.

In a poor enough game, St Andrews open the scoring with two great long range points from lively full-forward Trevor Nolan and centre forward Joshua Doyle within ten minutes. However they failed to take full advantage of a decent wind and their only other score of the half came from the left boot of talented youngster Alan Beaton. Clonmore enjoyed plenty of good possession but their final pass went astray on too many occasions and they had managed to score three points from John McGrath and Gavin Byrne (0-2) in the first half. Thanks to a brilliant save on the stroke of half time by Paudge McGrath, in a one-to-one with Josh Doyle, the score at half-time read: 0-3 apiece.

Immediately on the resumption, John McGrath made good use of the wind to kick a forty yard point but Clonmore were rocked five minutes later when a mix-up between Paudge McGrath and his backs let in Trevor Nolan for an open goal. Clonmore responded well and midfielder Ronan Doyle slotted over two fine points in two minutes to restore parity. The game swung from end-to-end as Trevor Nolan and Gavin Byrne exchanged two points each to leave the scores level at 1-5 to 0-8 on 53 minutes before the final score of the game came on 57 minutes, a difficult free 40 yards out on the right which Byrne slotted over impressively for the winner.

Best for Clonmore were brothers Gavin & Wesley Byrne, Ronan & Colin Doyle, Paudge, Enda & John McGrath, Bobby Rooney, John Kelly and Pauric Lawlor. For St Andrews, Pa Cody in goal, Larry Bolger, Morgan Drea, John Doyle, Josh Doyle and Trevor Nolan played well.
