Paudge saves Clonmore’s blushes

St Mullins                  0-14

Clonmore                   3-5

Clonmore had goalkeeper Paudge McGrath to thank for maintaining their unbeaten run in SFL Division 2 after he brilliantly saved two penalties in this hard fought encounter played in heavy rain at St Mullins on Thursday last.

McGrath’s first save came on 20 minutes from Chris Kavanagh while the second, from substitute David Murphy, came late in the game and saved Clonmore from certain defeat. McGrath did not just save the penalties but he had to be very brave on both occasions to keep out the rebounds as well. Clonmore must also thank another long serving stalwart, Jamie Doyle, whose contribution of two goals and a point kept his team in the game.

Clonmore raced into an early lead with goals from Con Murphy and Doyle but some good point scoring from William Foley and Chris Kavanagh kept St Mullins in the hunt at half-time – 2-2 to 0-6.

The second half saw St Mullins throw everything at Clonmore and with Darren Whelan, William Foley and Chris Kavanagh showing great accuracy from frees and play, they put themselves into the lead on 52 mins – 0-13 to 2-5. But the Clonmore forwards always looked dangerous and a Jamie Doyle goal on 55 minutes put his team back in front. It looked like the men from the north-east might hold out for another one point win when Murphy’s penalty was saved by McGrath but a late free by William Foley gave St Mullins a deserved draw.
