SKGAA Newsletter 11/04/18

November 8, 2018

A chairde,

Lots of news this week and good results across the board with wins for the senior footballers, Junior A camogie team, U16 hurling and Ladies Football teams and many more. The Prairie is receieving its treatment this week so it should be open again from the weekend on fingers crossed. Again our thanks for your continued patience and support. This Friday alone, the club has been fixed for 6 matches at a home venue and without the possibility of playing 8pm throw in games for another few weeks it is simply impossible to accomodate all these games so a huge thanks to club secretary Alan Hassett who does a fantastic job juggling all of these issues. Looking forward to seeing many of you at the Ladies Football table Quiz tomorrow evening in Sheridans.

More information below:

There are 2 important pieces of information we wish to bring to your attention.

1. The Club have been allocated a number of tickets for the Ed Sheeran concerts on the Saturday the 12th and Sunday the 13th of May in Pearce Stadium. Approximately 50 are now available to be used in an open draw for club members to buy at face value (much like the draws for the All Ireland tickets). To be within a chance of securing a ticket leave your name and the night you would prefer to attend (either Saturday or Sunday) with James in the office. If two members of your family are members you may leave two names etc… The draw will take place on Friday the 20th of April so all submissions must be in by then. Reminder you must be fully registered with the club in 2018 for your your name to be entered into the draw.

To facilitate the running of the concert, SKGAA Executive Committee have formalised a deal with Aiken Promotion through Galway County Board that will see the Árus and the Prairie used around the time of the concert. The Árus will be closed from Monday the 7th of May to Monday the 14th inclusive and the Prairie will be closed from the 3rd of May to the 17th of May inclusive (with the possibility of a few more days closure afterwards depending on weather.) SKGAA Executive Committee have worked extremely hard over the past 6 months to put a deal in place that will be of huge benefit to the club. This agreement was passed at our monthly meeting on Monday the 9th of April. The club is satisfied (finally) that its needs have been met and that everything will be returned exactly as expected following the concert. The County Board have agreed to accommodate us with fixtures as much as possible but again we would ask for people's understanding when dealing with this for the 2 week period involved.

2. Health and Wellbeing

As part of the club's Health and Wellbeing Initiatives, we have organised a trip to Croke Park Museum on the 5th of May. All the details are in the flyer below but here's a quick breakdown:

– Bus leaves the Árus at 9am on Saturday the 5th of May.

– The cost is 35euro for OAP's and 40 euro for anybody else.

– The cost includes the bus, lunch and a guided tour all taking place at Croke Park.

– People will have a chance to look around the museum themselves after the tour.

– The bus will stop once on the way up and once on the way back.

– The trip is open to anyone at all, not just members or OAP's but we are targeting our Life Members and Retired Members of the Community in particular as a social outing.

– To book a place just call James in the office on 091527333 or call into him in the Árus.

– Places are limited so please book your place early to guarentee your space.

– If you know of anyone who might be interested in this trip, please let them know.

Adult Football

The seniors began their Division 1 campaign with a 2 point victory over Oughterard in very tough conditions last Saturday. The team started slowly playing against a very defensive home opposition but gradually got into the game. It was great to see Gary Cox back for another season, and he played extremely well. a special mention to Shane Kelly who made his long awaited come back after a torid time with injury and has also been drafted into the Galway U20 panel. Final score 0-9 to 0-7. Next up in St. James at home on Sunday evening.

Both Junior teams are in action this weekend with the Juniors playing their first Division 5 game at home vs Killanin on Friday evening at 7pm TBC and the Junior A's away to Spiddal on saturday evening at 7pm.

The minors play Moycullen on Wednesday evening and a win will see them qualify for the league final fixed for next Wednesday vs Barna in Pearse Stadium.

Keep an eye on social media for updated times and venues.

The U20s are awaiting the fixture for the West Board Final where they will play Moycullen. The winners will go on to play Mounbellew Moylough in the County Final.  Mountbellew Moylough overcame Claregalway at the weekend after extra time in the North Board decider.

SK U16 Girls Football Update Tues 10/4/18

Letterfrack and The Inagh Valley never looked so good as the Victorious SK U16 girls coasted back to The City having lowered the local Grainne Mhaols Girls Banner with a fine 6-4[22 pts] to 2-9[15 pts] victory in Game 3 of the 2018 Div 2 league.

Great credit is due to the Girls that travelled out West and took on Grainne Mhaols on their home pitch. County Star Emma Madden again gave an outstanding performance and was superbly backed up by all the other Girls who dug in and demonstrated to the opposition that they were not just out for a site seeing Sunday drive.

Grainne Mhaols started with a Double marker tactic on SK full forward Emma Madden. It worked for a while but eventually Emma struck for four goals with sublime balls being fed inside by the Girls outfield.

SK turned over well ahead at halftime but Grainne Mhaols closed the gap to just 2 points with approx. 15 Min's to go. SK girls again dug in and worked very hard for the final Qtr to finish Stronger than G.Mhaols.

Great credit goes to the Girls and Selectors for devising and implementing counter measure tactics to offset the Double marker on County Player Emma Madden.

Next Up is 1/4 Final planned for weekend of 14/15th April. Watch this space as the play offs unfold.

Again Many Thanks to the Supporters, Parents, 1st Aider, Selectors, Umpires and The Mum that volunteered to wash the Fantastic new Jerseys.

u12 – U12a girls football team had a great victory over Corofin in the league on Monday eve. The score finished 5-2 to 4-3. Well done to all the players!!

u10 – girls back training (skipathon/Kickathon) in Arus 7-8pm this Wednesday. Please bring collection card and money.

u6/u8 – Football training for U8 & U6 girls will begin on Wednesday 11/04/18 at 6pm in McGraths Field. Help from parents with coaching would be greatly appreciated.

Coaching Corner

Another great Hurling/Camogie Academy is running in the Arus this week, with over 80 players, aged 9 to 14, taking part – in spite of the weather!

A big shout out to our own young club coaches, drawn from our minor and adult hurling and camogie teams, who are working hard all week with our next generation of players: Matthew Keane, Siobhán  Divilly, Eimear Kelly, Sarah Keane, Ailbhe O'Grady, Ronan McGuinness.

In addition, three coaches from our current Transition Year Work Experience Programme are developing their coaching skills further by helping out: Brian Palmer, Eoin O'Neill and Diarmuid Munroe. Delighted also to have had coaches from around the county, including county under 21 star Evan Niland and Galway's own Gerry Spelman and Michael Gallagher. A big thank you to Clodagh Cox and Joe Maguire for help with the administration, to Clem Garvey, to John Donohue and James Molloy for facilitating access to the Prairie and the Arus and finally, to all the coaches and parents who organised the kids to attend. A true club effort!
