SKGAA Newsletter 20/9/17

November 8, 2018

A chairde,

Things are really hotting up in the various championships. The camogie juggernaut continues with the juniors following the U16s and U14s in qualifying for a county final. The U14 footballers play Ballinasloe in the Championship Semi Final at home this Friday at 6pm and the U12 girls footballers have had their crucial match vs Moivea resheduled for Thursday at home as well. The U17 hurlers completed 3 out of 3, adding Rahoon/Newcastle to their previous victories over Liam Mellows and Carnmore in the innagural U17 Urban Development Championship, founded by our very own hard-working Hurling Director, John McGettigan. The lads have now qualified for the final.

The Salthill Knocknacarra GAA Senior Football team who reached the semi finals of the All Ireland 7's held in Kilmacud Crokes last weekend.

Back L-R: Evan Murphy, Robert Butler, Andrew Butler, John Maher, Robert Finnerty, Marcus MacDonnchadha. Front L-R: Brian Conlon, Evan Duffy, Evan Wynne, William Finnerty, Jack O'Dowd (Mascot).

10 of the younger members of the senior squad travelled to Kilmacud Crokes on Saturday last to compete in the All Ireland 7's. It is the first time in a number of years the club has sent a team. But the lads performed magnificently topping their group and beating Leixlip in the quarter final only to go down the Kilamacud Crokes, the hosts in the semi final by 3 points. The hosts experience at 7s stood to them as they did everything possible to deny SKGAA goals.

U12's playing in the 13B league won the league shield last Friday with a comprehensive win against Naomh Anna Leitir mhor, in Rossaveal. The team did really well in the league stages, winning 5 out of 6 games and this league has been beneficial in developing the entire squad, especially playing at a year above their age. All U12's played a part during this league and all 28 played at some stage during the final.
We still await results from U12 leagues before next steps are decided.
Our 12B (group 7) team play Spiddal in their final league game on Sunday.

Ladies Football

Junior – Best of luck to the Ladies who are heading up to Naomh Mearnóg, Dublin on Friday for the All Ireland 7s taking place over the weekend.

u18/u16 –  Minor girls will be starting their fitness training along with some of the u 16 girls on Sunday evenings time to be confirmed . We hope to start mid October.

u12 – U12 Girls A team played a  well prepared Monivea team last Wed out there. On the (extremely sodden…) field our girls put in a real battling performance. After a nervous enough start the game developed into a very tight affair. Level after full time, level after extra time almost in the dark + ultimately level after penalties. The ref for some reason then awarded victory to Monivea. We have since appealed the decision.
Our players displayed a level of resilience+never say die attitude that was heartwarming to behold. And in fairness the Monivea girls were great too. It's just a real pity that so many "adults" seem to have forgotten what this is all supposed to be about.
Watch this space!

u8 – U8's were kindly invited to Moycullen blitz last Saturday.  Both u8s teams had three competitive games. Training again the Wednesday in Mc Grath pitch 6-7pm.
