SKGAA Newsletter 5/7/17

A chairde,

We had wonderful celebrations in the club on Saturday night when the Galway U14 Ladies Football team finished their tour of the county following the All Ireland final win over Kerry in Nenagh. With our own Emma Madden, captaining the side, the team finished their tour at the Árus. A huge thank you to all the parents, coaches, players and supporters who came out to welcome home the team and their trophies. And a particular large thanks to Emma and Laura's parents who organised the homecoming in the space of a few hours and arranged food and decoration in the hall. Else where there is more county action to look forward to with plenty of SKGAA interest. The minor footballers are in the Connacht Final at 12pm this Sunday where SKGAA's Eoin McFadden and Evan Murphy will hope to put back to back Connacht minors together and afterwards of course, the seniors including Sean Armstrong are up against Roscommon at 2pm. A reminder to all that there will be car-parking facilities in the sand area available for 5euro. Be sure and spread the word and get down early if you want a space yourself as it filled up very quickly for the semi final. Elsewhere there were good wins for the U13 and U14 camogie team as well as the Junior and Senior footballers. There was however heartbreak for the U16 hurlers who lost out in the U16 A county semi final to Oranmore Maree by a single point. That's two county semi final and a county A final loss in three years for these lads. We have no doubt they will cross the final hurdle in the coming years. They are a credit to their coaches and the club for competing at such a high level.

County

Best of luck to Sean Armstrong, Evan Murphy and Eoin McFadden in the senior and minor Connacht Football Finals this weekend.

Juvenile

- U8's had blitz last Sat. v. Claregalway in Cappagh park and play St.James this Sat. in Mervue at 11.30am. We take a break from training/games after Sat. till Sept. so enjoy the holidays. Thanks to all who have helped out since Jan.

- U9's played Barna last Tuesday in Cappagh. Great turnout by SKGAA and each team won their games. Training continues for the next couple of weeks.

- U11's had a good win by U12B in group 4 versus Killanin winning 11-12 to 2-2. Killanin didn't bring their shooting boots, however an encouraging performance by our lads with some very good passing and movement and supporting each other on the pitch. Good to get off to a winning start.

Next game is away vs Barna next Saturday morning at 11am.

- U12A team started their league with a win over Killannin. SKGAA went down by 6 points at one stage but rallied well before running out 5-12 to 3-04 winners.

The U12's playing as 13B team had a fantastic 3-05 to 2-04 win over Barna. Some superb link up play and teamwork means the team have now won 3 games out of 3 in this league. Many players were missing for various reasons and a lot of the squad players did really well.

Our second U12B were scheduled to play Eire Og, but were given the points. They play Oughterard on Thursday evening, while the 12A's will play Barna in the league on Sunday evening.

- U13A's played one of their best team performances to date last Fri evening v Oranmore-Maree. We started strong & led right through, dug in deep at the end to keep our lead & deserved our win. One of this team's best attributes is their discipline and this stood to us in the last 10 minutes when the pressure came on from Oranmore.

Training Tues 6-7.15 in St. Mary's with u14b Match on Fri (Home) v Leitir Mor and a serious challenge next Sun morning 10am Cappagh v NaFianna of Dublin.

- U14's have had a break from championship in the last few weeks. They play St Michael's on Monday in the Prairie at 7pm and are currently top of the league going into the final rounds before knockout championship kicks in. U15B's lost to Annaghdown and Tuam recently. They play Loughrea on Tuesday away.

- U15A's resumed their league after the exam break with a comprehensive win away to Oranmore by 7-13 to 3-3. Next outing is a top of the table clash v St Michaels on Tuesday July11th.

- U16's resume their league away against Oranmore this Friday.  This is an eagerly awaited clash as these two teams have had good battles over the past few years. Should be a cracker.

Camogie

U8 participated in cluster blitz recently in Rahoon and performed very well. Training this week is the last session before a four week break

U13s started county summer league with a win against Oranmore Maree on Tuesday evening in Cappagh. Further matches to be played in the coming week.

U14 camogie had  a good win over Abbeyknockmoy on Monday evening in Cappagh Park in the Summer League. In a very exciting game we recovered from conceding two early goals to win by 4.05 to 4.01.

Well done to Joanne O'Flaherty who played at half time at the Galway Wexford Leinster Final in Croke Park last Sunday.

Training in Cappagh on Thursday evening 6.50 to 8pm  and no training on Saturday.

U16 playing a challenge against Cois Farraige this weekend. Time and venue tbc.

Juniors training Thursday 7.45-9.15 in Cappagh. Next match v Kilconieron TBC.

Hurling

Adult Hurling

Junior Hurlers were to Play Ardahan this weekend in Crunch Championship match. However, for various reasons this match has been postponed.

SK have been given a walkover for their upcoming Junior Championship  vs Loughrea. As a result, the aforementioned Match vs Ardahan in coming weeks will be do or die for the lads when it comes to qualification so keep an eye out for this pivotal fixture.

Hard luck to the Under 16s who gave it their all on Tuesday night in their Semi Final and did the club so proud. The Minor, Under 21 and Adult hurlers look forward to playing with those talented young men in the coming years.

No Minor fixture for this weekend.

U13 Hurling

The U13's suffered a heavy defeat to Tommy Larkins last Monday evening in the Prairie. We play Cappataggle next Saturday at 12pm in Cappataggle.

U16 Hurling

The U16's played Oranmore Maree in the county semi final last Tuesday evening in Kenny park Athenry.  We lost by a point. Hard luck to the team and management.

Coach the Young Coaches Level One Certs presented last Friday (nice photo elsewhere!). Thanks to Deirdre Corcoran, Sean Cullen, Diarmuid Hennessy and Maria Scanlon for providing excellent assessment and feedback to coaches on Friday, to Carol O'Connell, Frank Keane and Conor O'Shea for facilitating workshops, and to under 11 girls who were coached on Friday by young coaches as part of the final session. And finally to the young coaches themselves for their interest, enthusiasm and commitment to the programme. Coaches still in action over next few weeks with Italian students!

Ladies Football

Junior - First round of championship July 8th @ 8pm vs Claregalway B in Knockdoemore. Good luck to all involved!

u14 - Successful week for the two SK girls, Emma Madden and Laura Kelly who played on the Galway Ladies County Team that won the All Ireland Ladies Football title on Sat. 1st July in McDonagh Park Nenagh. In beating Kerry on an impressive scoreline of 6-9 to 1-14, the two girls join a small group of All Ireland County medals in the Club. Emma Madden was granted the additional honour and role of Captaining the Team and lead the team very well in taking the match to Kerry and defending skilfully against a fancied Kerry attack. On the other hand, Laura lead the attack and in doing opened up the Kerry defence throughout the first half. In doing so, she ended scoring 3-2 in the Final. Well done Girls. You represented County, Club and Family in a very impressive manner. The photo below shows the two girls with their Club mates after beating Kerry in Nenagh.

Many Thanks to all the Girls and Parents who made the Trip to Nenagh to support Emma and Laura and also to the many Club members who prepared the Aras for visit of the victorious Team who called to the Clubhouse at midnight. Another small group of girls, Ava, Therese and Eilish made a lovely Blue and Yellow Banner to Welcome the Girls home. Again. Well Done to All

On the Pitch, Training continued Thurs 29th and then we all took a break on the Sat to watch the Girls in Nenagh.

Many Girls are attending the Galway LAdies U13 and U15 Development Academy Squads. Well Done Girls. Keep up the Good work.
