SKGAA Newsletter 6/9/17

November 8, 2018

A chairde,

It was a fantastic weekend for all associated with Galway GAA to see the Galway seniors and minors winning All Ireland Hurling titles with the seniors bridging a long 29 year gap. I hope you have all been enjoying the celebration over the past number of days. There was an SKGAA presence in both teams with PJ Kelly involved in the training of the minors and Orla Armstrong working as a physio with the seniors. A huge congrats to both.

Here at SKGAA it was a week of mixed fortunes. There were big wins for the U16 camogie team, the minor footballers and the U15 hurlers, but disappointing loses for the senior footballers and the the Junior ladies footballers.

Best of luck again to our 6 representatives on the Galway City West football team who will compete in the final of the Ted Webb tournament vs Roscommon this Friday at 7.45pm in Bekan, Ballyhaunis.

Football

Senior:

Commiserations to the senior footballers who were beaten by Corofin in the championship on Saturday. The teams were well matched in the first half but a soft goal given away by SKGAA meant they went into the break 3 points adrift. A blistering start by Corofin saw them race into an 8 point lead in the second half. But a spirited SK never gave up and with the help of some good substitutions got within 2 points of Corofin with only minutes to go. Unfortunately it wasn't to be on the day. The lads can hold their heads high after the game and will feel if they could have had a game or two extra before meeting Corofin after the long summer break they might have fared better. Final Score SKGAA 2-12, Corofin 1-18. The seniors are not finished yet and will need at least one more victory to guarentee Division 1 status in the league next year.

Minor

The minor footballer have qualified for the West Board Final after their third and final group game resulted in a third win, beating Moycullen 2-16 to 1-08 in Cappagh last night. They now await the winners of Barna and Oughterard in the final.

Junior

The juniors will play their crucial West Board semi-final this Sunday at 4.30pm in Rosmuc vs Renvyle. They are the only team to get the better of the juniors this year and our lads will have to beat them twice now to qualify for the West Board Final and to win the league.

U12 Hurling

Hard luck to all the team last Thursday evening in the Prairie.  The team lost to Annaghdown by a point in their County semi final.

U15 Hurling

U15 hurling campaign started on Friday (1 Sept) with an away fixture to Annghdown. Salthill got off to a slow start and went 2 points down. Ten minutes in Jack Ryan earned a penelty that Diarmuid Monroe put in the net and that lifted the team and they got to half time 2 points in the lead. Adam Kennedy had not played with the 2002/03 squad before and came on at half time. A few minutes in he made a critical short pass that led to a goal. Two more goals followed from Barry Murphy and Daniel Joyce, which opened a gap Annaghdown could not close. Now that the team had found their rhythm, there were plenty of points from distance from Evan Nolan and Diarmuid Munroe, with Fergus Haney and Shane O'Neil also contributing points to the score board. The final score was 4-14 to 3-6.

Ladies Football

Junior - Hard luck to the Junior Ladies who unfortunately came out the wrong side of a well contested championship semi final against St.Furseys last night in the Prairie. Both sides exchanged some great scores throughout, with Skgaa falling 2 points short at the final whistle. Skgaa fought to the very end and perhaps with another few minutes may have pushed on to win it. A disappointing final result for the ladies in the end but a performance to be proud of with a super effort put in my the whole panel. Thanks to all the supporters that came out!
