Two League victories for Greenfields 1sts.

November 8, 2018

Greenfields land an excellent one-two in Connacht Hockey League.

Last weekend was a busy one for Greenfields Hockey Club.  Having received a bye from Fermoy in the IrishHockey Trophy Round II,  they took the opportunity to grab some points in the Connacht Senior League.  On Saturday the 1st team lined out against the 2nds.  The young 2nds team which acts as a feeder to the first team put up a great performance against their  more experienced elders.  The back line of Meghan Forde, Susan Tierney, Ciara Redden and Kelly Dunleavey, all of whom are still under 16, dealt well with consistent pressure from the 1sts attackers and Ciara Concannon in goal kept the games scoreless for some time.

The pressure finally told when a short corner strike from Mary Healy took a well timed deflection to leave 1sts a goal to the good at half time.  A great strike from Alice Meagher off a short corner gave the 1sts a comfortable lead midway through the 2nd half.  After hard work by midfielders Eli Noone,  Anna Boyce & Becky Anderson, a great shot from Rebecca Gilligan gave the 2nds a well earned goal and upped the pressure on their clubmates. Sorcha Minihan created a number of chances before the end,  but 1sts held on to take the points on a 3 – 1 scoreline.

Sunday saw a quick turnaround from Greenfields 1sts when they took on a well drilled Galway 2nds team, who made them work hard for their victory.  Greenfields started strongly winning a short corner in the first 20 seconds of the games but Galway defended well throughout and Greenfields first goal came from an excellent deflection from Rachel Wyer off a short corner. Galway’s Catherine Clancy and Niamh Johnston dealt well with the pressure put on by Greenfield’s forwards Trish Garrett and Becky Anderson.  However Greenfields confirmed their superiority late in the second half when Neasa McGettigan rounded a few players from a short corner and her shot gave the Galway keeper Ailbhe Nally no chance.  Some excellent saves from Nally kept Galway in the game but Greenfields finally ran out winners by 2 – 0.

Greenfields next face Yeats County HC in Sligo next weekend.
