U-14s go down battling in league final. Mayo Gaels 5-10 Charlestown 8-9

Our U-14 team put in a fine display in the Division 4A league final in McHale Park, Castlebar on Wednesday evening when they made a heavily fancied Charlestown side battle all the way for victory. Charlestown who had hammered all teams in the league series were expected to run out easy winners but were given the fright of their lives in the opening twenty minutes as the Gaels lead 1-5 to 1-2. The East Mayo side’s ability to strike for goals ultimately proved the difference between the sides. They was heavily illustrated in the final then minutes of the opening half when they hit three in quick succession to leave them 4-5 to 1-7 ahead at halftime. The second half was an even affair with the Gaels matching their opposition in every sector. Indeed Charlestown only outscored the Gaels by a single point in the second half but their first half goals proved the difference in the end as they won on a score line of Mayo Gaels 5-10 Charlestown 8-9. It was a fine team effort by the Gaels lads who can be proud of their display. Their scores on the evening were France Regan 2-4, James Jennings 1-2, Liam Hughes 1-1, John Gallagher 1-0, Ronan Commins 0-1 and Kevin Kenna 0-1. They are out in action in the Mayo championship when they face Moy Davitts at home.
