U14 Blitz Report

November 8, 2018

Greenfields travelled in a full bus to Athlone last Saturday for the first U 14 B tournament of the season.

The new 8 v 8 format was put into practice following recent IHA guidelines. This allows for more teams to participate. Greenfields had 5 teams drawn from the 6th class and 1st year players.

Teams from Athlone, Kinvara and Galway Hockey Club also took part. The first part of the day was a round robin and all teams played 3 matches each. There were mixed results but, overall, all the teams improved steadily as the day progressed.

Greenfields 1 quickly emerged as the on-form team. They easily made their way through to the semifinal. They played a superb match against Athlone 3 in the semis and great performances were given by all the team, with Eva Holland, Alex Mc Nicholas and Alison Hennessy sealing the win for Greenfields.

After Greenfields 1's superb run of 5 victorious matches in a row, the final against Kinvara proved a great display of guts and determination and the coaches were delighted with the standard of hockey from the girls in green.

However, they met their match in a very strong Kinvara team. All the Greenfields players kept up their determined play and were really unlucky to concede a goal just before half time. The players resumed with great energy and despite several corners and even a penalty, they just could not break down the Kinvara defence.

They were cheered on all the way by their club mates, but sadly the final whistle came.  Kinvara were presented with the victory plaque.  Greenfields 1, though tired, wet and very hungry, resolved to fight hard to win it at the next tournament.

All in all, it was a great day of hockey. Deirdre Lowe in Athlone ran the day without a hitch and everyone is looking forward to the next U14 Tournament in Galway in November.
