U14's Qualify For Semi-Final

November 8, 2018

Edenderry…………….4-11
Kilcormac/Killoughey……2-05

Last Thursday evening Edenderry defeated Kilcormac/Killoughey in the U14 football championship to clinch a championship semi-final spot. After a poor first half performance, The Reds put in a great second half display to run out winners on a scoreline of 4-11 to 2-5.

Edenderry actually made an excellent start when they scored two goals and a point without reply to get off to a flying start. Ciaran Farrell opened the scoring when he punched the ball to the net, after a great ball across the goals from Alex Kenny. Mikey Clear then followed that goal with a fantastic point after a great solo run. Edenderry then had the ball in the net for the second time when Aaron McDonnell reacted quickest to a rebound off the post from a Mikey Clear shot, and he coolly slotted the ball past the Kilcormac/Killoughey goalie. Kilcormac/Killoughey then opened their scoring with an excellent point. They soon sent over their second point, before they had the ball in the net for their first goal to reduce Edenderry’s lead to two points. Kilcormac/Killoughey were soon in front when they scored an excellent goal followed by two points, one from play and one from a free, to go in front by three points. Alex Kenny then sent over a brilliant point from an acute angle after a good pass from Mikey Clear, to stop Kilcormac/Killoughey’s sequence of scoring. Jamie Dolan then cut Kilcormac/Killoughey’s lead to a single point as he scored a good point when he picked up a rebound after the Kilcormac/Killoughey goalie made a fine save from Aaron McDonnell. Just before the halftime break, Kilcormac/Killoughey scored a point from a free to leave two points between the sides at the break.

Halftime, Edenderry 2-03 Kilcormac/Killoughey 2-05.

Edenderry made a good but fortunate start to the second half, when a Mikey Clear free was deflected into the net by a Kilcormac/Killoughey defender. Alex Kenny then scored a point from a free which was awarded for a high tackle on Mikey Clear. Edenderry then had another good slice of luck when Aaron McDonnell sent an excellent ball towards the Kilcormac/Killoughey goals, the Kilcormac/Killoughey defence failed to deal with the ball, and the ball deflected off a defender into the net. Edenderry then scored a point after a great move involving Mikey Clear and Jamie Dolan ended with Oran Lawton sending over a good score. Aaron McDonnell added a very good point to his earlier goal, to stretch Edenderry’s lead to seven points. Alex Kenny then scored two points in a row; the first came from play after good work from Adam Mahon and Aaron McDonnell, and then second came from a free. Oran Lawton then scored a good point for his second score of the game, before Edenderry made a double substitution with Stephen Lennon and Mark Abbott coming in for Ciaran Farrell and Alex Kenny. Aaron McDonnell then scored a wonderful point, when sent the ball over the bar off his left boot as he was falling over. Edenderry then made a treble substitution with Bobby Walsh, Kevin Beatty and Ciaran Kelliher coming in for Leslie Nolan, Adam Mahon and Jamie Dolan. Shortly after his introduction, Bobby Walsh won possession in the full forward line, and he turned and sent over a brilliant point. With time almost up Kilcormac/Killoughey went in search of a consolation goal, but despite having nothing to do in the second half, Cain Brereton stayed alert as he made a fine save.

This was a must win game for Edenderry with a semi-final spot on the line. Despite not firing on all cylinders in the first half, Edenderry put in a brilliant performance in the second half, with great contributions from all 20 players. The draw for the semi-finals took place at the weekend with Edenderry drawing Kilcormac/Killoughey. The other semi-final will see Shamrocks face Ferbane/Belmont.
