U8 & U10 Hurlers Beat Ferbane/Belmont

November 8, 2018

On Thursday evening last Edenderry U8 & U10 hurlers travelled to Ferbane to play three small-sided challenge matches against the host club. In total 28 Edenderry players took part with two 10 aside teams and an 8 aside match for the youngest players.
On an evening that was a great success, Edenderry came away with two wins out three with the U10’s fighting back late in the game for a three point win and the younger U8 players winning by two clear goals. In the other game, the Edenderry lads made up of 8 & 9 year olds lost out to a very strong Ferbane/Belmont team.
Many thanks to Ferbane/Belmont for hosting the three games and it is hoped that a return fixture can be played in the next few weeks.

U10 (Team 1) Match Report
Edenderry………..4-06
Ferbane/Belmont……4-03

Having beaten Kinnitty a week earlier, Edenderry’s U10 hurlers made it back to back wins against Ferbane by coming from a point down in the last minute to win by three points following a high quality challenge match. The game was played over three thirds each of 15 minutes with the first 5 minutes of each third restricted to ground hurling only.
The first 15 minutes were very even with some great hurling by both teams. Following a slow start, Edenderry midfielders Shane Cummins and Donie Groome began to take control and played in plenty of early ball into the forward line where Cian Farrell was causing all sorts of problems for the Ferbane backs. Cian grabbed one goal and set up a second for Alex Cummins to fire home to leave teams tied at 2-1 each at the end of the 15 minutes.
Ferbane were the better team on the restart and put the Edenderry defence under a lot of pressure and despite great work in the backline from Gary Gorman and Eoin Dunne, the Ferbane lads led by 4 points at the end of the second third. The gap could have been greater but for a number of great saves by Oisin O’Grady in the Edenderry goals.
The final third started well for Ferbane and they pulled five points clear but this Edenderry team didn’t drop their heads and looked to fight their way back into the match. Shane Cummins pulled a point back and Cian Farrell grabbed his second goal to leave a point between the teams. The game went from end to end and we seen the best hurling of the match in this period. The Edenderry half backs, Ciaran Nolan and Ryan O’Neill were winning ball after ball and taking pressure of the defence. Conor McCarthy really came into the match on the half forward line and never let the Ferbane backs settle.
With a minute left Edenderry won a sideline ball 25 yards out on the right hand side and Shane Cummins stepped up to cut the ball beautifully like a bullet to the back of the Ferbane net to give Edenderry a two point lead. Within seconds Shane won the ball from the puck out and landed a lovely point off his left hand side to clinch the win.
The win was another step forward by this team and it shows that the hard work being put in during training is paying off. In the space of two weeks these lads have got away wins against the teams that contested last years U10 final and it shows the progress that they continue to make.
