Under 21 game abandoned

November 8, 2018

The under 21 hurlers had an amazing game in the Championship on Saturday last. We played St. Johns Ballinteer in Marlay Park and with a minute left on the clock in extra time, and Olaf’s winning by three points, the referee abandoned the game because of an injury to a Ballinteer player.

There was total confusion before it became apparent why the game was abandoned. It then turned out that the injured player could not be moved until an ambulance arrived. Ballinteer were very happy with the decision and their players left the pitch very smartly in case the referee changed his mind.

It was a crushing blow to Olaf’s as they had come back from the brink of defeat with fourteen men to go into the lead by a point before the end of normal time. Then the referee gave Ballinteer a free which they put over the bar to draw the game in normal time.

Olaf’s went into the lead through a goal by David Lynch in extra time and then the unbelievable happened and the match was abandoned.

Olaf’s had started the game very badly and failed to score in the first half in which Ballinteer scored 5 points. In the second half Olaf’s showed their class, they seemed to come to life after they had a man sent off and they slowly began to get on top. Declan O Dwyer who was not on from the start because of injury came on for the injured Chris Fennell and even playing with an injury Deco made a huge contribution, he turned the whole game when he scored a great goal.

Donal Kinsella knocked over a few lovely long range frees and Colly Kyne Delaney scored a point to put us up by one point with only minutes remaining. Then Ballinteer scored a free to send the game into extra time.

In extra time Olafs were well on top with minor players Dennis Kelleher, Colly Kyne Delaney, goalkeeper Mick O’Connor, Shane Mulvey and David Lynch having a big influence on game. Others to shine were David Howley at full back and Fergal Martin at centre back.

We will wait with interest what the decision of the County Board will be, but well done to our lads on a wonderful display.
