Tullamore Court Hotel Intermediate Football Championship Final

The famous Walsh Island club have made a return to the senior ranks after a convincing 1-14 to 0-7 victory over Doon in the Intermediate Football Championship final at O’Connor Park on Saturday, 26th September.

Beaten in last year’s final, Walsh Island entered the game as favourites and lived up to their billing. Boosted by a goal from wing back Matthew O’Connor, the winners led by 1-5 to 0-5 at the interval. Doon’s confidence had been helped by the fact they registered the last two points of the first half.

However, there was no doubt about the outcome from early in the second half as Walsh Island powered further ahead with a series of unanswered points to claim the Bill Kelly Cup with ten points to spare.

In extra-time, K/ K surged ahead and despite a third goal from Joe Bergin, the final score was Kilcormac/ Killoughey 2-19, Seir Kieran 3-12. Kilcormac/ Killoughey will meet Coolderry in the semi-final.

Reigning champions Birr disposed of Kinnitty in the second quater-final on Sunday at Banagher, which was a repeat of last year's final on a score of 3-16 to 2-9. There wasn't much between the sides as the second half progressed, and with little more than five minutes remaining, Birr just led by 1-14 to 2-9. However, they finished with a flourish to run out winners by ten points and set up a semi-final meeting with Tullamore. Birr goalscorers were Sean Ryan, who netted two, and Darragh Molloy, while Kinnitty's other goal was scored by Stephen Molloy.
