Weekly Notes 15th June

November 8, 2018

Out weekly lotto held in the Club House in Cregg produced no winner from the numbers 4, 10, 12 & 26.  There was five match 3's :- Gerry Cahill, Seamus Durkin, Mattie O Neill, Chloe Broderick & Fiona Duggan.  Hennelly's Corrandulla won the promoters prize and next weeks jackpot will be for a prize of €6,700 when the draw is held in the clubhouse on Monday night next.  Yearly tickets are going well and we urge all club members to subscribe to as it cost quite a bit to keep all our teams and facilities ticking over.  Thanks to all for their continued support and to the lotto committee for keeping the show on the road.

We produced our best thirty minutes of hurling to date this year in the first half of the Intermediate hurling Championship on Saturday in Athenry against Tommy Larkins and were only three points down 1-14 to 1-11 when Larkins struck for their second goal with twelve minutes left in the game.  Larkins dominated the closing exchanges outscoring Annaghdown by three points to leave the final score 2-20 to 1-14 in a sun drenched Kenny Park Athenry.  Larkin's started brightest going 1-1 to no score up after five minutes but Annaghdown held their own with Ronnie Leonard adding a tonic goal and great work by himself to make the space to strike a brilliant ground shot to the net.  At half time it was level pegging at 1-9 each with Annaghdown having missed quite a few point-scoring chances.  Annaghdown went a point up in the second half but Tommie's with better fire power saw them edge ahead as the game went on.  While Larkin's were undoubtedly the better hurlers Annaghdown showed tremendous spirit and didn't have the Slieve Aughty men's composure in front of goal or the luck with Michael Bindons referring decisions which were crutical in the sweltering heat.  All sixteen Annaghdown players used on the day played well and if we had showed the same passion and urgency in the first two games of the championship we would be now qualified for the knockout stages and not depending on other results to go our way. Team was: Mike Forde, Brian Qualter, Paul Creaven, Martin O'Neill, Fergal Doherty, Shane Collier (Capt.), Niall O'Keeffe, Cathal Gaffney (0-2), Fergal Coleman, Ronan Leonard (1-2), Martin Duggan, Con Butler (0-9, 6 frees), Adrian Murphy, Kevin Howley (0-1) and  Joe Fahy. Sub used: Mathias Coleman

In the Junior 'A' Football Championship in Menlough on Saturday we beat Ballinasloe by four points 0-13 to 0-9. It was a good team performance all round and it was our first win at this level for some time. We opened well and lead at the break by lead 0-6 to 0-4. Ballinasloe put it up to Annaghdown in the first 10 minutes of the second half but credit due to Annaghdown when their better finishing and fitness showed in the last twenty minutes.   Team was: Declan Walsh, Vinnie Small, Benny Newell, Alan Curry, Ian O'Dowd, Alan Newell (Capt.), Noel Burke, Ray Newell (0-3, 2 frees), Christy Burke, Liam O'Flynn (0-1), Padjoe Fahy (0-3), Darren Newell (0-2), Neill Joyce (0-1), James Melia (0-1) and Aidan Burke (0-1). Subs used David Rafftrey, Johnny Murphy (0-1) and Carl Leonard.

Our Under 8 and Under 10 footballers have two busy weekends ahead of them when they travel to Oranmore/Maree and Mountbellew/Moylough for two blitz's on the next two Saturdays.  On Saturday next all players from both panels are asked to be in Cregg at 10.15am to get the bus to Oranmore.  The following Saturday both panels will be going to Mountbellew and Moylough for blitz's in both grades.  There will be no under age football this Sunday.

U12 hurlers lost to Sylane on a 3-1 to 0-1 in their first championship game last Monday week.  Best for Annaghdown were Cormac Garvey, Justin O Flaherty, David Kerr and Nathan Hardiman.  Team was Eoghan Geoghegan, Nathan Hardiman, Dara Farragher, Darren Groarke, Cormac Garvey, Daniel Burke, Arron Fahy, Daniel Kerr, David Kerr, Rurairi Cusack, Justin O Flaherty, Patrick Garvey, Dara Fahy, Mark Hughes, Shaun Fahy. Subs used Robbie Melia (came late!). Under 12 hurlers lost to and excellent Meelick/Eyrecourt team on Monday night.  While the margin of defeat was big the spirit show was good and all twenty-one players who travelled got at least half and hour playing time.  Best for Annaghdown were Dara Farragher, Domhall Killilea, Thomas Griffin, Daniel Kerr, Daniel Burke,  John Potter, and Robbie Melia & Dara Fahy when introduced as a sub.  Team was Rurari Cusack, Domhall Killilea, Dara Farragher, Nathan Hardiman, Thomas Griffin, Daniel Burke, Arron Heaney, Daniel Kerr, David Kerr, Robbie Melia, Justin O Flaherty, John Potter, Pierce Glynn, Arron Fahy, Stephen Potter Subs Mark Hughes, Conor Ward, Brian Ward, Dara Fahy, Darren Groarke and Eoghan Geoghegan.  Under 12s have a game against Abbeyknockmoy on Sunday morning in Cregg at 11.30am.  All players to be there at 11.15am.   The next game will be against St. Columbas on Monday evening.

Underage hurling continues with twice weekly sessions in Cregg. Parents and others who are willing to help at coaching are welcome to attend. Under 14 & U16 hurling training continues on Friday nights in Cregg at 6.30pm.  We will also be training this Sunday at 10.30am for both panels.  All players included those doing exams are asked to attend. It will be just ball work and skills training for the duration of the exams. We play Ahascragh/Fohenagh in the first U16 championship game on July 2nd.
