We start our senior league this week-end with a game against Milltown away (check fixtures page) we play Mountbellew in the Minor football League to night (Wed) in Cregg at 7pm

Our U-14 football teams took part in the County Feile competitions held over the weekend.  We had two teams entered in the Feile this year, the first team took part in Div 1 of the Feile while the B side took part in a special Feile competition for clubs that had ‘B’ teams entered.  The groupings were as follows, Div 1 Moycullen, An Spideal and Annaghdown and this group was based in Moycullen. The B team were grouped with Claregalway and Oranmore and this group was based in Oranmore.
First team into action was the B team on Friday evening in Oranmore, our first game was against Claregalway in this game we started well in and got some nice scores but at the end we lost out to a more balanced Claregalway team.  Our next game was against the host club Oranmore in this game we really started well and clocked up some great scores from Niall Kinneen, Keith Melia, Ian Burke, and Richard Redding ton and our goal scorer was Dara Geoghegan.   Over the two games we had good performances from Ian Burke, Dara Higgins, Keith Melia, Shane Nugent, Ciaran Lardner and the very impressive Niall Kinneen who worked his socks off for the team.  At the end of all the matches in Oranmore both Claregalway and Annaghdown qualified to meet each other again this time in Caherlistrane on the following Sunday. The panel of players were David Burke, Ian Burke, Jar lath Curran, Tom Cummins, Paul Forde, Dara Higgins, Michael Mc Hugh ,Keith Melia, Richard Reddington, David Kinneen, Shane Canavan, Dara Geoghegan, Declan Hanley, Shane Nugent, Kevin Fox, Niall Kinneen and Ciaran Lardner.

On Saturday the Div 1 team started there first game against Moycullen. Annaghdown won the toss and elected to play with the breeze in the first half. We got some good early points before captain Keith Greaney got in to get a well taken goal. At half time we lead by just 2 points and having to face the breeze in the second half the team knew that it would take a big effort to win this match. In the second half Moycullen took control and raced in to a seven point lead, our lads stuck at it and got the Moycullen lead back down to just three points. The final score in the game was Moycullen 2-8 and Annaghdown 2-5, having hit the crossbar from 10 yards and the upright on four occasions lady luck was not on our side.  Our next game was against An Spideal and we found the going very hard in this game. We had to play against the breeze in the first half and Spideal scored some early goals and they made good use of the breeze.  In the second half we tried hard to take back the Spiddal lead but could not break down there defence and the game ended on a score line of Spiddal 4-5 and Annaghdown 1-5. Over the two games we had good performances from Pakie Killilea, Jonathan Farragher, Diarmuid Newell, Eoin Kerin, Seamus Curry and Keith Greaney. After this defeat we were out of the Feile competition for this year.  The panel of players who did us proud on the day was, Pakie Killilea, Sean Scally, Jonathan Farragher, Stephen Moylan, Sean Burke, Damian Comer, David Creaven, Diarmuid Newell, Matthew Duggan, Conor King, Conor McGrath, Joe Kerin, Eoin Kerin, Seamus Curry, Keith Greaney, Niall Kinneen, Kevin Fox, Ciaran Lardner and Cathal Coen.
On Sunday at 3.30pm in Caherlistrane our B team took on Claregalway in the final of there competition. We got a great start to this match with a well worked goal by Keith Melia and well taken points by our forwards. As we found when we played the same opposition on the Friday they did not panic and got them self back into the game with some well take points and a goal. As hard as we tried over the game we could not match Claregalway’s scoring power and we lost the game by five points. On the day we had good performances from Shane Nugent, Ciaran Lardner, Niall Kinneen, Ian Burke until he got injured, Keith Melia, Kevin Fox and sub Justin Flaherty when he came on. The panel on the day was David   Burke ,Ian Burke Jar lath Curran ,Tom Cummins, Paul Forde, Dara Higgins, Michael Mc Hugh, Keith Melia, Richard Redding ton , David Kinneen, Shane Canavan, Dara Geoghegan, Declan Hanley, Shane Nugent , Kevin Fox, Niall Kinneen, Ciaran Lardner and Justin Flaherty.
Thanks to all the lads on both panels who worked so hard over the weekend

Our under 12 Hurlers lost their City League game to Moycullen.  We have one final game to play against Bearna/Na Forbacha.

U14 Hurlers play their final group games this week against Kiltormer and Salthill/Knocknacarra.

We had a very successful Hurling training session on Sunday morning.  A lot of new children were introduced to the game as well as new coaches volunteering.  Thanks to football managers Regis Goulding, Tom Fahy, Ger Keane and Cathal Furey for their cooperation in making the day a success and to juvenile officers Seamus Collier and Fergal O Doherty for their support.  Also thanks to all the parents and coaches who helped out.  Underage hurling training for U8, U10 and U12 continues on Wednesday evenings at 6.30pm and Saturday mornings at 10.30am.  A limited number of hurls at €15 and helmets at €50 are still available. Help with coaching welcome and we will be organizing a coaching seminar in the near future for any volunteers.  Contact Sean Conway 087-2270108, Michael Geoghegan 086-2188010 or Seamus Collier 087-2968963 for further details.

Junior C Hurling League: Annaghdown 4-09 Sylane 0-02. A good performance all round for the junior hurlers last week down in Sylane.  Team was: Michael Forde, Thomas Burk Capt (0-1), Kenny Leonard, Ronan Newell, James Melia, Carl Leonard, John O’Neill, Vivian Silke, Niall O’Keeffe, Christy Burke(2-2), Pa Murphy(0-1), Martin Duggan(0-2), Kevin Howley(0-2, frees), Mike Geoghegan (1-1), Mike Donnellan. Subs used: Paul Walsh (1-0), Alan Newell, Niall Goaley and Bernard O’Brien.

Ballinasloe did not have a team for our intermediate hurling game against them on Sunday afternoon.  This was very disappointing as we missed out on a game with just two weeks to our first championship game against Cappataggle on May 5th/6th.

Our website photo gallery continues to grow and we have added photos of our U14 team played Caherlistrane in their first League game. Go to http://www.annaghdowngaa.com/Album/070411U14Girls/070411U14girls.html  for about 12 pictures of the forwards in action. There is also a team photo enclosed

The Under 16’s had a tough match against our neighbours Caherlistrane last Wednesday evening.  However determination and a never say die attitude brought us out on top with a score line of Annaghdown 4.11 to Caherlistrane 2.11.  Much praise has to be handed to our goal keeper Chloe Hughes who pulled off some great saves!

The Under 14’s faced the long journey back to Tullycross on Sunday last where they met a strong Grainne Mhaols side. Yet again our gaol keeper Laura Forde – who saved 2 penalties, supported by her backs , all had an outstanding match.  The final score line read Annaghdown 3.09 to Grainne Mhaols 2.08.  The journey home felt short as spirits were high.

Training for both Under 14’s and Under 16’s continues on Friday evening at 6.30p.m.

The Under 16’s meet Glenamaddy in Glenamaddy, while the under 14’s meet Kilkerrin/Clonberne in Clonberne this week.  Contact your manager for further details.

The Under 12’s travelled to Milltown on Monday night where they opened their League Campaign.  However a strong Milltown side defeated them on a score line of 5.05 to Annaghdown 3.05. They had an enjoyable evening out and we wish them success in their outing against Clarinbridge next week.  Training continues for them in Corrandulla pitch at 7p.m. this Thursday evening.

The under 10’s training started back last Sunday morning and will continue this Sunday in Cregg at 10.30 for all those who are 8 years old or more on 1st January 2007.
