Weekly Notes Castlewellan GAC 23 March 2014

November 8, 2018

* There was sad news this week at the passing of Lucy Kelly, mother of our club member Ann O’Neill and mother-in-law to our executive committee member John O’Neill. She was grandmother to our playing members Kate, Grainne and John O’Neill. We wish to extend our sympathy to the Kelly and O’Neill families and their wide family circle on this sad loss. Mary Queen of the Gael pray for them. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis.

* This Sunday sees the third Spring Lake Challenge! It will start at our Clubrooms at 1.00pm. There will be a 5K and a 10K race. There will be various male/female and other prizes. The entry fee for the race is £8.00. There will be tea, sandwiches and light refreshments in the club afterwards. We ask everyone who is participating in the event and have not yet registered for the race to please come early to the event and get the necessary administration work out of the way. This will help the administration staff and your co-operation will very much appreciated. Can we as members as possible to make themselves available to help with stewarding on the race route. Many hands make light work and will assist the runners and competitors along the way.

* The seconds footballers have continued their good start to the season with a two point win over Loughinisland off last Sunday. It was a tough dour affair with no quarter asked or given. Good performances from Brian McVeigh and Caolan Corrigan.

* Well done and hard luck to Cathal óg Keown and Pauric óg Hardy who were part of the Queens University Belfast Fresher’s Hurling Team that lost out to University of Ulster Jordanstown in the Division 2 All Ireland final. Hard luck also to club man and stalwart mentor Dick Looby who was also involved with the team.

* Well done to the Down Senior Camogie Team that featured Aoife Keown who beat Kilkenny on Hilltown at the weekend. Down are top of the league and unbeaten after four games. Well done to the Down Camogs. Keep her going.

* Under 10 and Under 12 hurling training has resumed every Monday at 5.45pm in St Malachy's Park. Any boys in the area who are interested in playing hurling is welcome to come along and get involved. There are sticks and helmets available for anyone starting out.

* Well done to all the hurlers from Bunscoil Bheanna Boirche, St Mary's, Aughlisnafin and St Malachy's, Castlewellan who were among a number of teams that played in the Primary Schools competition on Friday past. The 'Town' and 'Finn' schools have qualified for the finals in Warrenpoint on Friday 4thApril. Under 10 and Under 12 training should be interesting over the next week or two! Remember you play for The Town lads!

* ACTIV8 continues is continuing at pace. There was a film on the TV this week called World War Z. The Z stands for zombie. I shouldn’t really mix it up with Zumba and the fantastic efforts by those taking part in the class as part of ACTIV8, but there was those neck twists you see in the Thriller video that caught the eye at a recent class. Do not be surprised if you see a flash dance popping up in the isles of a local supermarket or around the town in the coming weeks such was the enthusiasm and the effort.

* Anyone interested in juvenile coaching in football, hurling or camogie please contact John O’Neill on 07711737610

* The Spring Coaching programme for Juveniles (Pre – School to P7) which commenced last Saturday in St Malachy’s High School will continue this Saturday morning. We would encourage everyone to register as members but for those who are maybe trying our games for the first time you can pay £5.00 for the 5 week programme and join later at which time the £5 will be deducted from the membership fee.
